Shoot some wd40 or some other spray lubricant around the edge of the dust collector and let it soak for 30 minutes and the you can take a pair of pliers and grab one of the ears closest to the edge and pull up. There is a rubber seal that has dried and gotten stuck. That should removemthe dust cap and allow you to access the 1/2" nut to remove the upper half of the agitator and replace your dogs.
Is this a whirlpool washer? The agitator dogs need to be replaced. Remove top cap on agitator, then plastic cover inside it, then remove bolt, then pull agitator off. Top can separate from bottom by standing on bottom and pulling up on upper. Go to Repairclinic.com to find agitator dogs.
Agitator has 4 Teeth - Dog Teeth I Beleve the name is in top part of Agitator. Take softener cap off top of Agitator. There is a plastic cover under softener cap. You need to remove plastic cover then you will see 4 teeth that lock into the agitator replace all 4 teeth make sure you put the teeth back in the same way or it won't work. Old teeth are rounded and won't grab Agitator anymore. Job not hard.
The agitator has two parts. One is the bottom agitator and then you have the top agitator that moves the clothes around. If the top part of the agitator is not moving. You probably need to replace the dog ears.Check theagitator dogsinside the top of the agitator, they are bad for wearing out, sometimes the agitator may only agitate one way when the dogs are worn out. On mine I pulled on the fabric softener plastic top.And under it was a cap. I pulled the cap off and looked inside to see a bolt (I think it was a 1/2" size. I needed a 1/2" socked and a 6" long extension and took the bolt completly loose. Righty tighty ,Lefty loosey. Then I just pulled up on big center plastic part and the dogs are under it. I hope this helps you.
the way to do this depends on if it is a dual action or triple action agitatior. dual action - Remove fabric softner dispenser -pull off plastic cap with flat blade screwdriver - bolt is under plastic cap 7/16" triple action (bounces up and down) remove fabric softenr and plastic cap with a 1/2" drive socket extention, put into square hole and unscrew spring assembly. once unscrewed top portion of agitator will come off
Ok, here is how ya do it. Remove the protective cap on top of the agitator (remove softener dispensor if optioned). Down in the hole you will see a plastic cap with a square fitting built in to it. Take a 1/2 extension and stick it in the hole. Unscrew the entire plastic button, then the spring. You can now remove the top and replace the dogs. A long pair of needle nose pliers can also unscrew that cap if its not to tight.
Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a
ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it
in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced.
To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the
agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the
agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic
gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.
your unit has agitator drive "dogs" that drive the top of the agitator and they do wear out. take off the fabric softner dispenser or the top cap from the agitator. then look inside the agitator and you will see a plastic cover with pull tabs on it. pull up on that cover and then you will see a bolt that allows you to remove the agitator. once out you can take the top off and get to the drive dogs. cheap to replace, about 5 bucks.
