    Actually when we got disconnected and I couldn't get back in touch with you despite repeated efforts I figured you weren't interested so I was forced to go elsewhere. I have since resolved the issue on my own.

Print server can see my printer, when I try to add it I get the following "The address is not valid. Please enter a valid address and try again".


For this case you have to do the printer port configuration on the computer.Following are the steps to do that:-
1)Click on Start, then Control Panel, then Printers and Faxes. Right click on the Printer and select Properties.
2)On the printer properties window, select Ports tab and click on Add Port
3)Select Standard TCP/IP Port and click on New Port.
4)In the field for Printer Name or IP Address, type the IP address of the print server and click Next.
5)Select Custom and click Settings button.
6)Under Protocol field, select LPR. For Queue Name, type L1 depending on what print server port is the printer connected to.
7)Click Ok, then Next, and Finish.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2, Office 2007, and an HP Photosmart C7280 off a wireless router. Printer scans OK but 9 times out of ten it can't see the PC. DHCP is "on" but printer IP address is sometimes Auto...


The problem is you want to have the printer on a fixed IP address. This can be done by reserving the IP for the mac address of the printer in the router OR simpler just set the IP address in the printer.

Change IP settings
The default setting for the IP settings is Automatic, which sets the IP settings
automatically. However, if you are an advanced user, you might want to manually change
the IP address, subnet mask, or the default gateway. To see the IP address and subnet
mask of the HP All-in-One, print a network configuration page from the HP All-in-One.
NOTE: When manually entering an IP Setting, you must already be connected to an
active Network, otherwise the setting will not stay when you exit from the menu.
CAUTION: Be careful when manually assigning an IP address. If you enter an invalid
IP address during the installation, your network components will not be able to connect
with the HP All-in-One.
To change IP settings
1. Press Setup.
2. Press until Network is highlighted, then press OK.
The Network menu appears.
3. Press until Advanced Setup is highlighted, and then press OK.
4. Press until IP Settings is highlighted, and then press OK.
If the HP All-in-One is already connected to a wired network, you are prompted to
confirm that you want to change the IP settings. Press OK.
5. Press until Manual is highlighted, and then press OK.
6. Press to highlight one of the following IP settings, and then press OK.
• IP Address
• Subnet Mask
• Default Gateway
7. Enter your changes, and then press OK to confirm the setting.

Netgear ps121 won't print


Possible reason why you cannot print with the print server is because the computer is not getting a valid IP from the router or a firewall is installed in the computer. You have to disable all firewalls installed in the computer.

For the print server setup, please follow the steps below:

Note: Before setting up the print server, make sure that you can print when printer is connected directly to the computer.

1. Wire the print server to router. Check the lights on it. It should have the ACT light on and the Error light off.

2. One way to test if the printer would work with the print server is to reset the print server for 3 to 5 seconds while it is powered on and after you release the button, the printer should automatically print the IP address of the print server.

Note: If the printer did not print, there is a possibility that they are not compatible. However, you may still continue to try to set up the print server.

3. Install the PS121 software.

a. Power on your computer, let the operating system boot up completely, and log in as needed.
b. Insert the Resource CD for the PS121 into your CD-ROM drive. The CD main page shown at the right will load.
c. Click Install Software.
d. Click Next and follow the software installation utility prompts to complete the software installation.
e. When prompted, restart your computer to complete the installation.
f. When your computer restarts, click Finish to run the Print Server Setup Wizard.

4. Run the Print Server Setup Wizard to Set Up a Fixed IP Address for the PS121.

a. The Print Server Setup Wizard screen should be displayed.
b. Click Next to proceed. The Print Server Wizard will now search your network for the PS121. If the Print Server Setup Wizard cannot find your PS121, check the network connections and status lights on the PS121.
c. The “Server Name” and the “IP Address” your network assigned to the PS121 are displayed. Click Next to proceed to the device name screen.
d. You can enter a descriptive Device Name and Domain Name or accept the defaults. Click Next to proceed to the IP Address configuration screen. The Print Server Wizard displays a recommended static IP address setting for the PS121. This is usually fine.
e. Click Next to proceed.
f. Click Finish to exit the Print Server Setup Wizard. This completes the configuration of the PS121 for operation on your network.
g. Click Yes to run the Add Printer Port Wizard. Follow the instructions in the next section for using the this wizard to set up each computer to use the PS121.

To set up each computer to use the PS121, please follow the instructions below:

1. Use the NETGEAR Add Printer Wizard to set up each PC to use the PS121.
a. When the Print Server Setup Wizard finishes, you are prompted to run the Add Printer Port Wizard. Click Yes to proceed. Alternatively, from the Windows Start menu NETGEAR Print Server program group, you can run the NETGEAR Add Printer Wizard.
b. After a short delay while the software searches the network for your PS121, the Printer Select window opens and displays the PS121 you have set up.
c. Click Next to proceed to the Port/Printer name screen. Take note of the printer model number listed.

2. Set up the correct printer driver for the printer port.
a. Click Next to proceed to the Port/Printer name screen. Take note of the printer model number listed.
b. Click Next to proceed to the Select Printer screen. If you see the exact printer model number listed as the printer model number from in the previous screen, click it to select it from the list.
c. If prompted, print a test page to verify operation of the printer and the PS121. Then, close any remaining Add Printer Port Wizard or Windows Add Printer Wizard windows.

Use the NETGEAR PS121 Mini Print Server Resource CD to run the Add Printer Port Wizard to set up each PC on you network that you want to use with the PS121. Select the port you added

How to contact sys-admin(wiz)


Plug the print server in the back of your computer using the ethernet port. Insert the setup cd into the same computer. Assign an IP address for you print server using 10.10.10.xxx. xxx=available address number on your network. If it requires the gateway address use 10.10.10.1 if that is the correct address of your Linksys router.

You can verify the correct router address from your computer. Make sure your computer is connected to the network (not the print server) and go into the control panel. Select Network Connections. Move the mouse to you network card. Press the right mouse button and select status. The gateway address is your router address.

Manual Configuration of WGPS606 Print Server

Note: Before configuring the printer server please check if you printer is compatible. You may open this link to you web browser: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N101216.asp.

1. Please make sure that the printer works when connected directly to the computer.
2. Confirm the wireless settings of your router. You should have the SSID, wireless security and IP address of the router.

For NETGEAR routers please follow these instructions to check the wireless settings:

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

Note: If it does not take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you cannot remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it.

d. Click on Wireless Settings under Setup tab and you may get the wireless settings on that page.
e. On the left side under Advance setup, click on the LAN IP setup and locate the LAN TCP/IP Setup. Underneath that is the IP address of the router.

Note: If your IP address is 192.168.1.1, then you may use 192.168.1.200 for your print server.

3. Please connect a computer to the print server. At this time, the router is not connected. The printer should be connected to USB1. The power, LAN port and LPT1 should be lit.

4. Assign static IP address to the computer.

a. Click on Start and right click on Control Panel.
b. When the Control Panel window opens, double click Network Connections.
c. Right click on Local Area Connection, then click Properties. When the Local Area Connection Properties window appears, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then hit Properties button.
d. Change the option from Obtain an IP address automatically to Use the Following IP Address and enter the following:

IP: 192.168.0.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Note: Leave the default gateway and DNS addresses blank.

f. Click on OK and then Close. Exit out of all the Windows.

5. Ping the print server.

a. Click on Start and then Run. Type cmd and hit OK.
b. On the DOS prompt, type ping 192.168.0.102. This should give four responses.
c. If it gives request timed out or destination net unreachable, please turn off both print server and computer. Wait for few minutes, then turn it on again. You can also try holding the reset of the device. Then repeat steb 5.b.

6. If you are able to get replies, you may now open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.0.102 on the address field.
7. After hitting go or enter on the address field, it will ask for a login. (Please type in admin for Username and password for Password).
8. Click on Wireless Settings under Setup tab and we need to set the same SSID as your router.
9. Please also select the appropriate Wireless Security and type the network key or wireless password from the router. Then click on Apply to save the settings.
10. When you get back to the page, click Print Server settings.
11. Check Change to and set the following:

IP address: 192.168.1.200 (It should be on the same range as the router. e.g. 192.168.1.2 for the computer and 192.168.1.1 for the router). This will be the print server's IP address.
IP mask: 255.255.255.0

12. Click Apply to save the settings. We will get a Page cannot be displayed.
13. Set the IP address of the computer back to dynamic.

For Windows 2000 and XP:

a. Please click on Start, select Settings and then Control Panel.
b. Double click on the Network Connections icon.
c. Right click on Local Area Connection and click on Properties.
d. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.
e. Select the option Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server automatically.
f. Then click on OK.

For Windows 98 and ME:

a. Please click on Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel.
b. Double-click Network then select TCP/IP for the Ethernet adapter. Then click on Properties.
c. Go to IP address tab and select Obtain an IP address automatically.
d. Click on the Gateway tab and delete the numbers under the Installed Gateway.
e. Click the DNS Configuration tab, and then select Disable.
f. Click on OK. Windows will then prompt for a restart.

14. To set up a TCP/IP port to the computer, please follow these steps:

a. Please click on Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel.
b. Double click on Printers and Faxes.
c. Right click the printer icon and go to Properties.
d. Click Port Tab and click Add Port.
e. Select Standard TCP/IP port. Hit OK or Next.
f. In the field for Printer Name or IP Address: enter the IP address of the Print Server and click on Next.
g. Select Custom and then click Settings.
h. Under Protocol select LPR, and for Queue Name, type L1 if printer is connected to the print server USB port 1 and L2 if the printer is connected to the 2nd port.
i. Click on OK, then Next, and Finish.
j. Lastly, please right click on your printer icon and select Use Printer Online. If this is not an option, disregard it.

15. Check if you can print through the print server.
16. If it is not printing, then please try to connect the print server to the router and check if you can print. If it can, then there might be a need to re-do the steps for wireless configuration of the printer server.

How to setup JetDirect Plus (J2591A)


Hi Sam,

I had a similar problem and solved it, so here is a step by step. Connected to a Linksys 54G wirekess router/hub it works fine on Vista and XP, the approach is the same but some windows might look different. You may not even need the HP software at all, as Windows recognizes the HP JetDirect. Also, depending on your PC software configuration, e.g Firewall settings and router settings you may have to permanently permit various communication request. The steps below are to be understood as a guide line and may vary form yours as there are different ways to achieve the settings. On Vista, Telnet is disabled by default and needs to be enabled frist. On XP telnet is enabled by default. If you use a Linksys or similar router, you may need to enable DHCP for some addresses or range that will be used. In such case see you router manual how to do that.


Step 1:

you need to know what your LAN address is, to find out you can open a DOS window and enter IPCONFIG, this will give you the current IP address and subnet mask. On a small home network it may be 192.168.1.xxx and sbunet mask may be 255. 255. 255. 0, yous may be different. Take note of these values (IP: aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) as you will have to set the HP JetDirect J2591A to the same address range.

Step 2:

connect the printer to the HP JetDirect, have paper in the printer, power the HP JetDirect and hold the test button on the HP JetDirect for about 7 seconds, the printer will then print the current HP JetDirect settings. You may notice the address range the HP JetDirect is set to may not be the same address range as you need it to be (your noted once)

Step 3:

connect a PC computer directly to the HP JetDirect using an Ethernet CROSSOVER cable OR connect a PC via a hub and tow standard Ethernet cables to the HP JetDirect.

Step 4:

TEMPORARELY change this PC computer network address to the same address range as the HP JetDirect address range (www.xxx.yyy.zzz) currently is set to and reboot the PC.

Step 5:

after reboot, the Status LED on the HP JetDirect should be solid on and the activity LED should be off or flashing occasionally, idicating some network traffic. Open a DOS window on the PC and run a telnet session by entering TELNET www.xxx.yyy.zzz [ENTER]. You may have to hit the Enter key tow times for a connection to start. You will then see a screen as follow:

Type passwd to change the password.

Type "?" for HELP, "/" for current settings or "quit" to save-and-exit.
Or type "exit" to exit without saving configuration parameter entries

Step 6:

Now you can change (likely neccessary) the HP JetDirect settings, make sure the HP JetDirect IP address is in the same range as you need it to be (for example aaa.bbb.ccc.25), also be sure to set the DHCP Config to Enabled. Optional you may want to enter a Host Name, for example: HP_PRINTER_SERVER, once you are done these new settings must be saved by entering 'quit' [Enter]. You may want to repeat Step 2 and print the new settings to convice youself the settings are retained and correct. (power cycle the JetDirect of course)

Step 7:

Connect your HP JetDirect to the intended network.

Step 8;

On the PC used to do the HP JetDirect configuration setup, restore the PC's initial network IP sddress and reboot it so it can be used again with its original settings.

Step 9:

On a PC connected to the same network as the HP JetDirect, open a DOS window and run a ping by entering: ping aaa.bbb.ccc.25 [Enter] depending on firewall settings you may have to grant permission to allow the ping to come through. You should then see a screen similar to this:

Note, there are 4 packets send and received without any loss. This is what you expect to see and great confirmation the HP JetDirect is on the network and ready. If you don't get that then there may be an issue with cabling and/or the firewall settings, you may want to double check these in such case.

Step 10:

On any PC connected to this network one can now insatll/connect to the printer that is connected to the HP JetDirect, using the Windows Add Printer Dialog, click to open the add printer wizard. Check the button for LOCAL printer (yes local, not networked !!! Who would have thought of that !? Thanks Bill G.) On the next screen that opens check the 'create new port' option and select 'Standard TCP/IP Port' OR (if available) 'HP Standard TCP/IP Port) and ckick Next. Another windows opens with TCP/IP setup wizard, click Next. An window opens, enter the HP JetDirect IP address (aaa.bbb.ccc.25) and click Next. Follow the Windows guide and finish entering the requested information. You may then want to print a Test Page once the dialog is completed, you may have to permanently allow requested traffic in the firewall settings again.

Step 11:

Your done, congratulations !

TCP/IP printing for windows xp:
you must know the IP address of the print server and the port name.and the pc's ip address must be in the same subnet as the print sever's ip address.
Step 1 Go to Start > Settings > Printers and double-click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer Wizard.
Step 2 Select Local Printer and click Next.
Step 3 Select Create a New Port and choose Standard TCP/IP Port from the drop-down menu and click Next.
Step 4 This will bring up the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard. Click Next.
Step 5 Enter the IP address of the print server and the port name and click Next.
Step 6 The next window will prompt you for the Device Type. Select the Standard radio button and use Generic Network Card from the drop-down window.
Step 7 Click Finish to close the port configuration wizard.
Step 8 This will bring you back to the Add Printer Wizard. Step through the remaining windows of the Add Printer Wizard, accepting the default values to complete configuration.
