Motherboard turnon but few second after failure

A motherboard automatically turning itself off could be a few problems.

1: Your RAM might not be compatible with each other. If you have more than one stick of RAM, make sure the brands are the same, or are compatible with each other in the least. Also make sure that the type of RAM (DDR3) is the type of RAM you have inserted.

2: Cords. Inside the computer, some of the cord connections might not be properly connected. Check primarily on your HDD, as well as any other main drives you have (CD Drive, Hard Disk Drive, and a Floppy Disk drive if you have it.) Check to make sure all the necessary cords start somewhere in the board, and end somewhere in a place if there is a place for them to end.

3: Power Supply. On most computers that I've used, near the power supply is a tiny little level/switch thing that controls how much power the computer gets. It could be this. If a motherboard is getting more power than it needs, then it automatically will shut off because it has no place to put the extra energy.

When i press the power button, it doesn't really come on, it makes a clicking noise then it shuts off. What could the problem be and how can it be fixed?

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problemis with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and takenote of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.Remove the Power Cord, (If desktop Open the Case) ( If Laptop Remove the Battery, Remove the cover that houses the memory on the bottom of the laptop)) and remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Pavilion Elite M9040N tower shuts down within seconds when I hit the power button. Blue light flashes 2-3 time and it shuts down. When I remove the processor ( Intel Q6600) unit stays on and when I pull...

Before you go and get a new motherboard, first let's try to do a hard reset.

Sometimes, hp and Compaq computers bios will lock up, causing this condition.

To do the hard reset, first make sure all the cords are connected to the points where they belong.

Now, unplug your ethernet cable, and your power cord.

This stops all power from coming into the machine.

Next, press and hold the power button in for 30 to 45 seconds.

This causes the capacitors on the motherboard, and the ones in the power supply to dissipate, and returns them to a ready state.

After doing that, reconnect just the power cord and attempt to power on the computer.
If it boots, then it was the bios glitch, if not, then you have a faulty motherboard, that or you have a device installed the wrong way, so that when the system boots up, it calls for the power to that device in an unusual way, then the system will shut down to prevent damage.

If it does boot up, then you can reconnect the ethernet cable back, otherwise there is no sense of hooking it back up as you would be replacing the motherboard anyways.

I hope you have good luck with this, and have a good day.

THis sounds like a power supply issue.. I had a similar issue with mine. my fan would kick on for about 2 seconds then shut off.

Asus a8v-vm se fans always run

Hi jderek4, try this. locate the toggle switch on the back of the power supply. Just find it do not flip it.
Plug the PSU's power cord into the PC. Just as you got a good connection & the PC begains to power up move the toggle switch to it's other position. The PC should power off that very second.
If the PC does not shut off than the PSU is bad. If it did shut down wait a few seconds. Press the cases power on button. The PC should start to boot up. Let it finish loading. Click the start button & choose to shut down windows. The PC should shut off.
Yes? If not than your back to (bad power supply). Swap it out.
