If you are using windows XP go to control panel > add remove programs > then click show updates. at the top of the window. you should be able to uninstall the most recent update (or the one that screwed up your computer) if your using vista the process is very similar, basically the same thing.

Automatic updates/ network adaptor goes missing / magically returns after system restore

Where is the Network Adapter originating from? Windows? If the Update is a Windows update, Hide the update. It may be an error, it's happen to me on a HP Network Adapter, When I installed it the Ethernet Adapter would not work, I rolled-back the driver on the Ethernet Adapter and it worked perfectly. I "Hide" the Windows update in Windows Updates.

My wireless button does not turn into blue so I cannot connect to any wireless conncetion

There's a good chance that windows update has updated your driver. If you can connect through a wired connection then go to device manager and network adaptor, right click on the wireless network adaptor and click update driver. Tell it to search automatically and if it gives you the option then yes you do want to search the internet for drivers.
You didn't say so in the question but I'm assuming that your laptop is a Compaq CQ series.

Engenius wireless lan usb2.0 adapter driver

A lan adaptor driver is fixable by downloading from the network site of the USB 2.0.
important notes
1. Lan adaptors are outdated versions incompartible with recent operating systems. Acquiring a new USB device or even wireless modems are the latest alternatives to lan computer connections of the past. Modern wireless modem connection have built in installation kits, also present is the computers capability to recognise to integrate to a network.

Hp pavilion a330n Internet Explorer won't connect.

check your IP Adress settings are correct for this machine,
Go to start ,then click on run,Type CMD,Then type IPCONFIG/ALL.it will show you a list of all the devices connected to your machine and your local network,

Have you got LAN & WLAN adaptors on board?
this will explain your message,
you will have to set the ip settings on each adaptor
ie LAN 192.168.1.2 and WLAN 192.168.1.3
This wiil help determine which adaptor is to be used when connecting to the network and the internet.

If your using wireless on computer to connect to the internet then run your wizard to help setup the connection

Same for the wired LAN ,use your wizard

The settings for your modem can be reset easily and your ISP will help get you connected to the net because you already have an account with them,

I have a yellow machine p400t and i need to give it a static IP address and do this through a linksys router. how do i go about this? do i need to attach it to a computer?

Yes, it must be attached to the network 0. Install the yellow machine software on the PC 1.Log on to the Yellow Machine Manager. Go to “Logging On To Yellow Machine Manager” on page 8. 2.From the Yellow Machine Manager, click Network > Network Interfaces. The Network Interfaces window appears. 3.Click Edit. 4.Select Yes to Enable LAN Interface. Default: Yes (Enabled) • If you select No, all other LAN option fields are blocked. • If you disable the LAN Interface, the only access to the Yellow Machine appliance is through the WAN port. Anthology Solutions does not recommend this configuration. 5.Check Enable DHCP Service if the DHCP service is needed for the PCs attached to the Yellow Machine appliance’s LAN ports. This setting makes the Yellow Machine appliance the DHCP server for your LAN (or sub-network), providing IP addresses dynamically for the clients connected to the LAN ports. Default: Checked (Disabled) 6.Select either Obtain IP Address Automatically from DHCP Server, or Static IP Address. Default: Static IP Address • Choose Obtain IP Address Automatically from DHCP Server if your Yellow Machine appliance connects to either a router that has DHCP service enabled or to a cable modem. This setting makes the Yellow Machine appliance a DHCP client on your network. • Obtain IP Address from ADSL provider is greyed out. • Choose Static IP Address if your network is locally defined and controlled and does not use DHCP services. Type the IP address manually. 7.Specify IP address and Subnet mask if you selected a Static IP Address, and click Apply. 8.Click Yes to confirm, No to abort. The changes takes affect within five seconds after the network interface change notice appears.

Check your security settings would be a good start. Have you checked to see if XP uses WEP to authenticate? (it should do this automatically but sometimes it doesn't)

Power management related query

Some system have a BIOS settings like these. There are 2 options affecting the NIC. LAN/WLAN switching and LAN power save. Are both LAN power save and LAN/WLAN switching enabled?

On my laptop, it does the same thing as your computer when its on battery (HP laptop) except when there is an ethernet cable plugged in or loopback. I made a little loopback plug to keep the port active even when it is unplugged.

Thinkpad r40 - wireless disappeared

Go to the control panel, then System, then Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Then Network adapters - you should have two network adapters one LAN and one wireless.
If most likely have one, the LAN adapter and a yellow ? against a network adapter - this will be a wireless adapter (its not installed)

Check your BIOS and make sure the wireless card is enabled.
You need to download from the IBM/Lenove WEB site the wireless driver (there may be several types that is installed for your model laptop). Make sure you select the correct Windows version driver.
When you run the driver,it will uncompress and copy to your hard drive in C:\drivers. You can then install the driver from this directory. If it doesn't work then repeat with another driver, most likely one that works will be the Intel one.

Wireless Network?

The modern laptop and Wii will be no problem. Windows 98 will work but it can be much trickier to set up.

Parts needed
1 x Wireless Router - You can pick up a 2WIRE Router from around £20 on eBay
3 x Wireless LAN Network Adaptors - Around £20 each.

Firstly, the Router. This bit connects to your telephone line and broadcasts your broadband signal by radio and allows several computers to use one service. When you buy a router make sure it includes installation software. You can install routers without, but it's a whole lot easier if you have it.

Next you need to be able to receive the broadband radio signal on your computers and Wii.To receive the signal you need Wireless LAN Network Adaptors on each device. Network Adaptors also have software, which allows you to install the drivers needed.

Your laptop may already have a wireless adaptor built in.
You can check this by clicking
Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Communications\Network Connections
Then see if a Wireless adaptor is present. If it isn't, you can install one inside the laptop by buying a laptop wireless network card. Easier, is to buy a USB Wireless LAN Network Adaptor which just plugs in to a USB socket on the laptop.

Look for LAN Network adaptors that are suitable for the Wii and a separate one suitable for Windows 98. Most will be ok for the laptop.

Install the router first. just do what the software tells you, then install the LAN adaptor drivers on each device you want networked.

Finally, make sure you secure your router signal. That stops the guy next door using your network and offers some security from hackers. Your router will include a firewall and you can set up a key code that your adaptors will need before they can connect. Unless the guy next door has the key, he won't be able to use
your network and play your MP3s...hoorah!
Follow the instructions given in the software to set up a WPA or WEP security key.

Great fun, you'll love it if you can get it all going.
