I have a Uniden DCT 7585 base with three hand sets. Two of the handsets suddenly declare out of range whenever you try to make a call or access the base. I was given an answer that I should deregister the handset and register. Once I hit deregister sequence on handset that had out of range, it indicated out of range

  • schlueter Jan 06, 2009

I tried the solution of trying to deregister the phones and re registering them and got a out of range message when I tried to deregister the handset phones.
I then put each phone in the base and tried to make calls on them, and I am still get the out of range message

  • schlueter Jan 06, 2009

I have tried both solutions of deregistering the phone and putting each out of rante in the base and neither proposed solution has fixed the out of range problems

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, your description "Two of the handsets suddenly declare out of range whenever you try to make a call or access the base." is significant. If it were only one, then it could be hardware failure, two at the same time indicates external factors affecting the operation. A couple of ideas you could explore, consider and/or try:

  • determine if there was something electrical/electronic in nature that was installed/activated during the same time frame that the two handsets started to fail;
  • was there anything out of the ordinary on or about that time? Power failure, fluctuation, electrical works done at the house;
  • does bringing the handsets closer to the base improve performance;
  • was the base physically moved, relocated;
  • were the units dropped inadvertently.
Should none of the above address your issue, then an exploratory check should be made by a qualified professional. The phones have to be opened, components tested, power output measured, and receiver sensitivity verified. If the cost of repairs and downtime would be factored in, then you may have to re-evaluate your options and consider replacements.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Registering Accessory Handsets
If you purchase an accessory handset, you need to register the handset before use. Only one handset can be
registered at a time. Handsets supplied with the phone are registered to the base by the factory. When charged, preregistered
handsets display a handset ID number. Handsets that have not been registered display MODELS VARY!
CHARGE HANDSET ON THE BASE FOR REGISTRATION OR REFER TO OWNER’S MANUAL. (If an accessory
handset has ever been registered to a base, you must reset the handset before you can register it to a new base. See
Resetting Handsets on page 21.)
When you register an accessory handset to the base, the handset ID will be assigned.

Resetting the Handset
You may need to reset your handset in the following instances:
• When you want to change the digital security code.
• You lose a handset and purchase a new one.
• You get the message Registration Failed when you try to register the handset.
• You are unable to register any handsets to the base.
• When you register new handsets to the base, the handset IDs do not match. (For example, the handset
registers as "Handset #4" but you only have two handsets.)
• When you are instructed to by one of Uniden's call center representatives.
1. Press and hold [ ] and [#/>] for more than 5 seconds. Select DEREGISTER HS.
2. Select the handset you want to reset, then press [select/ ].
3. The phone will ask you to confirm the deregistration. Select YES. The selected handset will clear its
registration information from the base, and then delete the link to the base from its own memory

I think the problem is not with phone; the problem is related to service provider, so contact to your service provider.

4. When the base information is deleted, the handset displays MODELS VARY! CHARGE HANDSET ON THE
BASE FOR REGISTRATION OR REFER TO OWNER’S MANUAL.
5. Re-register the handset to the base (see Registering Accessory Handsets on page 20).
If the handset cannot contact the base, it will display UNAVAILABLE. Make sure the handset is in range of the base
and the base is connected to power.
Resetting the Handset Without the Base
If your original base is not available for some reason (for example, it is lost or somehow incapacitated), you can still
reset the handset and use it with another base.
1. Press and hold [ ] and [#/>] for at least 5 seconds.
2. Move the cursor to select REPLACING BASE and then press [select/ ]. REPLACE BASE appears.
3. Move the cursor to select YES, and then press [select/ ]. You hear a confirmation tone, and the handset
deletes its own base information without contacting the base. The handset displays MODELS VARY!
CHARGE HANDSET ON THE BASE FOR REGISTRATION OR REFER TO OWNER’S MANUAL.
4. Register the handset to the new base (see Registering Accessory Handsets on page 20).

My uniden phone says - out of range

Uniden wxi477 out of range fix

This problem arises when the handset does not communicate with the base.
These are the steps:
1: Deregistering the handset
2: Registering the handset to base

Deregestering clears the stored (incorrect) base information on the handset.
Reregestering allows the base to assign a new ID for the handset.

Deregistering- press and hold the OFF (red button) and the # button on the handset for 5 seconds. select base unavailable and press OK. Are you sure appears. select yes and press OK. you will hear a confirmation tone. The handset will delete its own base information without trying to contact the base. It will now display MODELS VARY PLACE HANDSET ON THE BASE FOR REGISTRATION.

Registering the handset with the base- Make sure the tel. line and power is plugged into the base.
Press an hold the register button under the base (located between the tel. line and yellow power socket under the base) for 5 seconds until the red light flashes. At the same time press and hold the # button on the handset for 5 secs. You will hear a tone and It will now display REGISTRATION COMPLETE.

If it says registration failed: Retry the registration steps. Make sure the handset have enough battery power. If not charge for 15-20 hrs.
Check your connections on the base and make it is getting power.

The Steps above was my fix for the uniden wxi477 out of range problem.

Good luck.

If you are not too far away-not "out of range" then try rehoming/pairing the handset with the base unit. You probably need the phones together to do this. Your manual will explain how-it will have been done in the original setup.

1 Answer

Can I use handsets from another DCT 748 unit to expand my DCT 748

Short answer:
No. This model of phone can only support 4 handsets. If you need more than that, you will need to have a second base unit.

Detailed answer:
One of my handsets went bad, and I just bought complete DCT748-4 package from a seller on eBay for a very good price. This set was used, but in very good condition. I didn't need the whole set - just one handset - but like I said, it was a good price. Anyway, I began by telling my old base unit to de-register handset #2 (the failed unit). However, I then found that I could not register the "new" handset with my old base unit because it was already registered to the "new" base unit. So, I first had to apply power to the "new" base unit and de-register the handsets. Then, I placed one of the "new" handsets onto my old base unit, and it said "Handset Registering ..." and registered just fine. Just for the fun of it, I placed one of the other spare handsets into my old base unit. It said "Hanset Registering ..." but then it beeped and said "Registration Failed." This is because I already had 4 handsets registered to my base, and the base can not handle a fifth handset.

Handheld won't communicate with the base

i have the same problem and it has happened infrequently several times. you probably have to deregister the handset and re-register it and rest the base and handheld to communicate since my model is different from yours there may be differences in how to go about it but for my model the suggestion is as follows:

go to www.uniden.com for customer support here is a direct link to some frequentlt asked questions http://www.mycusthelp.com/uniden/supportfaq.asp?sSessionID=&lstFilter_a=&lstFilter_b=&lstFilter_c=&txtCriteria=hanset+won%27t+connect+to+base&optcond=2&iStartCount=1

Answer:

Try resetting the phone system by using the following steps:

1) Enter the "System Reset" menu, then "Deregister HS" submenu.
2) Press volume/up or down arrow keys to select the handset ID to be de-registered from the list, then press the OK soft key.
3) Press the OK soft key. You will hear a confirmation tone. When de-registration is complete, "Deregistration Complete" appears.

4) After de-registering the handset, move to "Replacing the Base Setting" below. When you go through the deregister procedure if you get "out of range", That is okay. Go ahead and go to the next step.

Replacing the Base Setting
1) Enter the "System Reset" menu, then "Replacing Base" submenu. "Do you want to replace Base?" appears.

2) Press the OK soft key. You will hear a conformation tone. The base information will be deleted. When replacing the base is complete, "Please Register" appears, register the handset to the new base.

If your handset is reading out of range. Check the the main base and make sure you unit has power. This can be done by placing the handset in the main base to see if the charge in use light comes on.
If your main base isn't getting power please make sure the ac adapter is plugged in and is warm to the touch. If not the ac adapter would be damaged.
To resolve out of range follow the below steps.
Press and hold the end key.
Press and hold the # key.

Release the keys and select replacing base and press select.
You will see Replace base?
Select Yes and press select.
Now place the handset on the base and it should register to the base and allow for calls to be made.

How does one get the handsets to record the new speed dial numbers on the base phone?

I'm pretty sure the speed dial numbers are programmed on a per-phone basis. Most people would not want changes on one phone's speed dial to effect the other phones. I know registering the handsets will not make a difference. If the cordless phone is working, it's registered to the base. This is required so your neighbor cannot buy the same phone model and use your phone line. In the old days cordless phones were permanently linked to one base but now you can get extra handsets on many systems and "register" the phone to work on your base.

Phones (4) do not work

If you tried the registration process discribed in the book, it is possible that the base may have gotten zapped. Happened to me. Bought a new DCT 758 (cheap at Amazon.com) with only one extra handset and used two of the old handsets with it. It will only support the handset in the base and 3 others, so you can't use all of the old ones (save them for extras).
