Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE Spacesaver Microwave interior fan shuts off randomly

When we start our microwave it is fine for a few moments, but then it gets much quieter. I believe the interior fan meant to keep excessive heat from building up is shuttng down. The microwave seems to be cooking fine otherwise. Is this something I should be concerned enough about to call a service technician out or if it needs to be addressed is this something I could fix myself? I am a pretty good "fixit" kind of guy, but I do not know anything about microwaves.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

Can you post a video clip with sound?

Otherwise, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Hi, This is Mike. My GE spacesaver xl1400 is shutting off as if it has lost AC power seconds after hitting the start button. The last couple of times it reset itself and now its dead. (power source is ok)....

-thermal cutout
-fan/fan motor
-transformer
-capacitor/diode
-circuit board, triac or magnetron

any of these could be the culprit
any of these can be tested
let me know if you need further instructions

My spacesaver dated September of 2004 shuts off

I solved the problem by buying a new microwave and it was not a GE. I feel that GE should have had a recall on this problem, since it seemed to be a major problem in their system. I will never buy another GE product.

Heat doesn't come on in microwave

If you have the experience with discharging a capacitor and you have a (VOM) Volt Olm Meter. Unplug microwave, discharge capacitor, and check the resistance of the two thermal cut-off discs by removing the lead and set VOM to RX1. If you don't get a reading of zero, replace the discs. For part go to www.partselect.com and enter your model number. If you found any of these suggestions helpful, please rate my solution. D. Lange

GE Spacesaver 1800 XL - rattling sound

Hi jnflanders,
You've probably solved this by now, but I'll answer just in case. That part is called the stirrer motor. You can replace it yourself, as long as you have an offset phillip's head screwdriver handy.
Before you order the replacement part, figure out if your stirrer is driven by a d-shaped or a square shaft. You can tell by taking off the round plate on the inside top wall of the microwave. GE makes stirrer motors for both d-shaped and square shafts, so you'll have to get the right one. Here's the d-shaped motor that fixed this problem with my microwave: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2024961.
Good luck!
