Question about Samsung HLN617W 61" Rear Projection HDTV
This television will turn off by itself after being on for a short period (3 or 4 minutes) I was told that the problem might be the digital board( the board in the center of tv when cover is removed ) but @ $280.00 I thought I should get a 2nd opinion. there are 2 things that might be helpful in the diagnosis
1) After the set is powered up, the fans or color wheel seem to shut off, for a split second, then back on the set works fine 3 to 4 minutes then shuts down. TV cools off for 5 or 10 minutes, I turn set back on and cycle repeats
2) There also is an arching sound that is coming from a component on what seems to be a Hi Voltage board on the right side of tv above the large cooling fan this component also glows sometimes, ( is this normal?)
See Component on board.

i highly doubt all 3 fans went out at the same exact time! i have the same error message occasionally but now all i do is remove the lower back cover,on the middle left there is a connection that is about 12 inches from the bottom. i just toggle the connection and voila! it works fine for another month or so.
im starting to think that connection has to do with supplying power to the fans etc.
i originally thought it was the fan but it seems impossible to me now that it could be
samsung needs to replace all the bad dlps theyve produced i mean cmon this is america where its goverment for the people, right?
i find this forum very helpful but wish there were less questions and more answers to them.
if that doesnt fix it for you try cleaning it with a vacuum brush.
if that doesnt work just start bugging the hell out of samsung until they replace it.

SOURCE: Tv shuts itself off
Look for the computer processor inside the TV. It needs to be cleaned. A can of compressed air will work. The processor is overheating and causing the tv to shut off. Look for the small fan that is supposed to keep the processor cool then remove the dust.

SOURCE: Check Fan No. 2 Error Message
The DMD board you installed is bad. It senses the detection line from the fan and generates the error code. Try installing the old DMD board.

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

I have seen this problem many times. The only thing is that it can be caused by multiple reasons. First of all, if the temp light flashes on the front when it shuts off it is probably caused by an airflow issue. If the lights on the front by the power button do not flash you need to replace the power supply. My tv at home does both. I have two different problems causing shutdown on an HLR4677. What I did was to put a nickel under the temp. fuse above the lamp to raise the shutdown tempurature and cleaned out all the vents. Also, I put a small fan behind the set right behind the lamp cover and the set will play usually for many hours at a time without shutting down. The other thing that they had problems with on this model was the lamp switch which can easily be bypassed to determine if that is the cause. It is the little blue post by the lamp cover door. More than likely you have a tempurature shutdown but don't jump the tempurature sensor. It will protect against fire in the event of a lamp overheat situation. If you call a repair shop make sure you get the Samsung authorized place because these can be tricky. Good luck, Russmann.
