hi there, check your printer whether everything is fine with it, meaning check the ink, check if it can print. somehow with HP's all-in-one printer, when one function can't be used, the others can't too. check and let me know.
Try ths:
This happens mainly when you try to scan from the printer ; Always try to scan from HP solution center but still here is the resolution: Open Hp Solution center Click on Settings Click on scn settings click on Scan to Setup Select all the option available to updrade the Front panel menu list and click on ADD Click on Update; Restart the computer and the printer and try to scan. It should resolve the issue.

Uninstall everything that has to do with your old HP printer, drivers, photo processing, etc. Reinstall software with J4580 printer. That should open HP Digital Imaging Monitor where you can set scanning options. Plug printer into the back opf your computer. Plug power supply directly into the wall socket.
Some things to try. XP service pack 3 came out and it and some OS patches could cause conflicts with older Anti-Virus programs. Below is a link to Microsoft's KB

So try sending a newly created office file to another PC to see if it can open up on it.
In Word/Excel under the help menu there is a detect/repair option.
Try disabling your AV program to see what happens.
