Laptop won't turn on

I have an advent 7302 - a while ago it needed to be plugged in all the time to work. the charger stopped working and i bought a new one last august and all was fine. at xmas my son said the charged had gone again, however, i have checked it on something else and it's not the charger so i bought a new battery. we have plugged it in today but it still won't turn on. please help as my 16 year son is so depressed without the laptop. Many thanks, Leigh

Thanks for such a quick answer. If it's not the battery and it is the socket on the motherboard is that easy to fix?

    thanks

It can be lose laptop power inlet too.
There are several ways to check it.
1. Try to use laptop with only charger and see if it is working
2. Try to use the charger you bought with similar laptop, but it might be hard to check.
3. As was suggested before, try to borrow the known working adapter and use it with/without battery. And try to put the power inlet more tight to see if it will help.
But if it is Dell it most probably defective power adapter socket on motherboard
Good Luck

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, charge the new battery for at least 4 hours without turning on the laptop. Even with the laptop off, there should be some indication (a light) that the laptop is receiving AC power and is charging the battery. If there is no such light, then we have a hardware issue.

Since you have checked the charger (presumably powering another device) and the battery is new (but could still be a suspect), that would leave us with the charging circuitry/internal regulator of the Advent 7302. This could be as simple as a cold solder problem, detached connection, cut foil/trace on the board or a defective power jack. Whatever it is, the laptop has to be opened up for a look and see. With this in mind, it is therefore important to establish/eliminate the possibility that the charger and/or the battery as the culprit. On the:

  • battery, charge as above prescribed;
  • on the charger, use a voltmeter to verify voltage output.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

HI,

Please remove the battery and then try connecting it with the adaptor and turn on your laptop. If it works then the issue is with the battery and you need to replace it.Incase it doesn't turn on then the issue is with *********** board. You can try reinserting the ram and then try to turn it on.If it doesn't trun on then you will have to get this repaired. There are no home remedies.

Hi!

Based on experience... this may sound that you have a busted battery before and now it could be the ac adapter, or worst... the motherboard.

Easisest way to isolate problem is to get or borrow a known working ac adapter compatible with your system.

If it works, well and good since ac adapter is the only thing that needs replacement, but if not, it is really the motherboard unfortunately.

Try connecting laptop to charger without putting the battery in. If charger is good, and laptop still has no power, then it is likely a defective power adapter socket on laptop motherboard.

If the AC adapter is tested good, then the laptop must start even without the battery inside.

Try first connecting the laptop to the power adapter, without having the battery inside, if it is still dead (no lights or sign of power at all), then there is a fault.

If you have no power at all the fault is either an internal short, or a losen contact (broken solder joint) on the AC charger socket on motherboard.

This can be fixed at a local repair shop for a not too expensive charge. If the technician is good he will solder back the socket rather than replacing the motherboard.

Note : if you have lights coming on , then it is not the above, in that case is faulty motherboard, faulty RAM, or another faulty device, and the faulty part mnust be replaced.

About the easy fix, no , it is not easy to fix, to access the motherboard you need to take apart the laptop completely, and the soldering must be done in the proper way.

You need a technician to do the job.

sounds like a case of a wrong psu, you need to send the system back to Dell if i is still under warranty, if not the repairs for such a high end system are not cheap and can run into hundreds or more just for the boards to repair it!, contact them at www.dell.com/ and see about this issue as I have not had much experience with high end gaming laptops.

No a good idea to use a Cord/charger until you verify the power specs, they must be the EXACT same power specs in DC volts and milliamps , you may have fried a component/components in your Mobo. This may help diagnose the issue: http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86906.0

Might be stuck in hibernation. Pull the battery and ac power for about 1 hour. Replace and try to boot. If fails, pull the battery and try to boot just off ac power.

Sounds like the charge socket is not properly seated on the motherboard. I would call customer service on where you bought the laptop and tell them the situation. But by all mean DO NO continue to use it. You may do damage that they say "Is your fault"

Trust me I have had clients that have "Been there .. done that"

Good luck
