I'm not too good with this stuff. How do I uninstall and re-install the burner software. I really appreciate your time taken to answer. Thanks.

I managed to uninstall the DVD-ROM and then Windows reinstalled it on start-up. The problem was not resolved. It sounds like the disc tries to engage and fails, repeating this clicking sound. Do you think it is the laser or something mechanical?

    Thanks for your help.

This has happened to me before. I had to uninstall my burner's software and then reinstall it. I had Microsoft working on it for days but it was taking them to long so I did my thing and that was over 2 years ago now.

Yes it sounds like that may be your problem. Is your CD-Rom a combo: CD-DVD Rom in one or are they seperate? I purchased aPioneer combo drive for $49.99 at Best Buy a few years ago. They are cheaper now and very easy to put in.

If I were you I still would go to the Microsoft Support Chat line and let a Tecnician check things out for you before I wentout an purchased a new drive/Burner. They could tell you 100% sure if it is a mechanical problem or not.Might save you Money!!

After running a CD burn, PC treats it as a blank disc

Try putting the burned disc into another computer to see if it reads it. If not then it could be an issue with the disc burner itself. The laser could be going bad and that would cause the burner not to burn discs properly.

The pc won't burn cd's seems like it doesn't recognize cds or dvds

Does the cd/dvd drive read cds? This is a good test to ensure that the drive is functional.

Sometimes, generic cd/dvd burners do not recognize certain types of blank discs. Try another type of
brand blank discs, it should work.

Sony VGC RB53 wont recognize blank writeable cd/dvd's

Insert a blank CD, try to burn something on to the disk, if that is successfully done than the CD drive is fine, unless you have a problem. Sometimes blank discs don't show up with direct click.

You actually perhaps using a non blank disc at that time. Burners don't really accept non writeable Discs. Check your CD first before burning. If you are using a rewriteable disc (CD-rw) that has files, it can burn and files will be overwritten but if you're just using a CD-r with files in it, the burner will eject and will tell you to insert a blank disc.
