This is usually a corrupt partition table on the drive (since the drive is there but unreadable)
you'll need to get to a command prompt
change to the drive in question eg e drive or f drive (whichever your external drive shows up as)
type in
chkdsk /p

the system should then check the drive and fix any partition table should then be able to access the data on the drive...let me know what happens

Try deleting upper and lower filters in regedit (Registry Editor). See if this helps.

Also make sure that other USB devices can be read on your system.

Double check BIOS settings as well and try to reload default settings. (Make sure USB is on)

HI! Do you have any other cables for your external hdd? We can start by doing so to isolate issue. Or better yet, if you have another pc, try hooking it up there or from a friend's pc. Anyway, it's external. If it's detected there, issue is on settings/configuration of pc and not the hardware, could be the OS as well.

But, if it is hardware, it could be the USB cable connection only, or worst, the hdd itself... =(

My external HDD is no longer recognised by my PC. The usb port I tried works with other devices so that's not the reason. The curious thing is that when I connect the HDD to my TV I can view & play...

Plug it in, then on your desktop right click the My Computer icon, then click on Manage. From the window that opens click on Disk Management. In the right hand pane, you may then see your drive displayed. Right click in the lower right pane on your device and click on Explore. If it open the drive to show the files, you should be able to come out of all the windows and then access the drive normally.

In the past I have had problems with external esata drives. Unplug the drive and turn the computer off. Plug the drive back in (with the computer off) and restart the computer. Look if the drive is there.
Don't forget that external esata drives also need an external power supply.

External Hard Drive connected but hidden !!!

Connect it to your computer.
Right click on my computer and select Manage
On the left side click on Disk management.

Now on the right side, look around and see if you spot the external drive there.

What do you see there?

Also look into device manager, then look for anything with ! or ? yellow marks.

External harddrive

Sounds like a dead hard drive if 2 pc's won't recognize it.

Does it show up in device manager?
(Rightclick my computer click properties->hardware->device manager->disk drives...or click other devices instead of disk drives .)

Check for it in control panel->administrative tools->computer managerment->disk management too.
If it's not showing up get a replacement (assuming its under warranty).

I/O Magic external drive not showing up in computer

Extreme temperatures, either very hot or very cold, can certainly cause damage to your External Hard Drive.  Based upon your description, it sounds like the hard drive enclosure has been damaged.  This would explain why device manager can not recognize it.  Your hard drive is plug-and-play with Windows XP, so no drivers are necessary.  Have you tried plugging it into another computer?
If your hard drive casing has malfunctioned, then retrieving your data is as simple as putting the hard drive inside another hard drive enclosure.  Hard drive enclosures are available at any local computer store, and also available on the I/O Magic website.  Make sure to get the right size enclosure.  Your hard drive has a 3.5" hard drive inside it, which is a standard desktop hard drive.

If you put your hard drive in another enclosure and it still isn't recognized by multiple computers, then the hard drive inside the casing has probably been damaged, and I would recommend contacting a data recovery specialist.

Have a nice day,

Computer doesn't recognize drive anymore

Sounds like you are swapping this external drive between two PC's. Why don't you do this! Get it connected to one of your PC's preferrably your desktop. Once you get it connected and it is able to be read and you can read files or acces it! Share it out, under Windows XP you can share out drives, files, printers etc.

Once you do this both PC's can share this device without you having to swap between PC's manually!
I can walk you through this if you need further help, but if this persists, it sounds like your files are corrupt on this drive you may need to reformat the drive.
