You have to make the Ip changes on the laptop not on the modem.
You said you have internet acces on one computer. Then use that computer to find out the exact IP address used by the modem.
On the laptop use the exact same numbers, (IP, Sub mask, Gateway, Primary DNS)
and chek if it works.
If you want to have both computers on the Internet, simply change the last number on the IP address ONLY.

In order to use 2 modems you need to have two service providers.
If you have 2 service providers then you"ll have two network names(ssid's) for two different modems .
Connect your wireless computer to two different networks . So if one link goes down you can use another.
this is something simple
2 things you will have to do
the router when a problem like this happens again
unplug router for 1 minute this is packet build up and then plug back in i found this out by service provider that its a build up of packets it relieves packets
now the other thing since you went threw all the little areas of trying to reset modem go in remove your network connection
delete it and build a new network connection threw the network setup wizard then your done restart comp everything should be back to normal and you wont have to ever reset network settings again
just unplug the router let sit for minute and plug back in
You need to disable the DHCP server on your "slave" wireless router ( the di-524 ). In D-link routers this might be called configuring it to be an "Access point".
When this happens, connecting to the second wireless router should cause your computer to obtain an IP address which is in the range of the first router (that is to say, it will use the first router's dhcp server).
You should be able have your laptop connect with an automatic IP address and have it work.
the default ipaddress for that is 192.168.0.1 you will need to set your computer with a ip address like 192.168.0.2 then you should be able to access it. be sure to change your computer back to DHCP after you reset the router
