For the price it would cost to repair it, you might as well buy a new one. To install a new one should not take more than 10 minutes.

I have a Compaq Presario SR1630NX...Had to scrub drive, not I can relad windows... getting following error "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" Got any suggestions, just...

Do you have the first boot device in Boot Order set to CDROM?

As SOON as you press the Power On button start tapping on the F10 key. tap in 2 second intervals.
You're supposed to wait until you see the HP logo, but if you wait too long, you'll miss this small window of opportunity.
This method should ensure that you enter BIOS Setup.

(If you get a stuck key error code beep, disregard it. It's okay.
It may be the F1 key to enter BIOS Setup. Watch the screen for the key to press to enter BIOS Setup. It will be shown.

Once you see it start tapping on that key. If the small window of opportunity passes, {Sometimes it goes by q-u-i-c-k}, press the CTRL key, ALT key, and DELete key AT THE SAME TIME.
This will restart your computer so you can try again)

The above link is to show you what the main menu looks like, in BIOS Setup for BIOS version 6, or less.
When in BIOS Setup you cannot use your mouse anymore. To navigate around you have to use the Keyboard.

Use the Right Arrow key to highlight - Boot
Press the Enter key.

Use the Down Arrow key to highlight Boot Priority.
Press the Enter key.

You want CDROM at the top of the list. Use the appropriate arrow key, and highlight CDROM.
Press the Minus key ( - ) to move CDROM around in the list.

With some versions of Boot Order you have to move each boot device until the boot device you want, is at the top of the list. With other versions you just keep pressing the minus key unti the boot device you want comes to the top of the list.

Once you have CDROM at the top of the list, Save Changes.
Look at the navigation guide at the side, and bottom. See which key you press to Save Changes.
(F10?)

Until you save changes it will be like you have done nothing at all. You are just looking around.

Once you press the appropriate key to save changes, a Y/N, or Yes/No will come up.
Just press the small case y key. You do not need to use a capital Y. (The capital Y is just shown for clarity)

The computer should restart now. Put the Win7 disk in the optical drive, if it is not in there already.

For BIOS versions 7 or higher, the information is shown on how to enter Boot Order.
Left-click on the + sign next to -
BIOS Version 7 or greater

Cdrom drive can not eject / Cdrom is stuck

How To Eject CD from CD-ROM drive if it is Stuck :

If you have a CD into CD-ROM drive and it is stuck and you are trying to eject tray of CDROM by pressing the eject button or windows eject command but CD won't eject as there is no command to eject a stuck compact disc from the CDROM drive then this article is for you.

Step 1: Switch off the computer.

5573fa0.jpgStep 2. On the front of the CD-ROM drive you may find a small hole called Emergency Eject hole below the tray of CD-ROM drive . Take a long pin around 3 inch, (also known as CD ejector) it must be hard enough, insert this pin inside the hole and push a little. The CD tray will slightly move to out.

Step 3: Now you may manually pull the tray and you are done. You have successfully ejected the stucked CD.

Step 4: Switch on the computer and you may work as usual.

Thanks
Proton

Tip

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Eject the CD/DVD Drive

Create a Shortcut to Eject the CD/DVD Drive
Right-click on the desktop or elsewhere and choose New \ Shortcut.
In the location box, put the full path to the nircmd.exe file that you downloaded, and append the "cdrom open" command to the end of it, adjusting the drive letter to match your disc drive:
"C:\path\to\nircmd.exe" cdrom open D:
Note the location of the quotes.. if you are using a path with spaces in it, you need to make sure the quotes are only around the path to the executable, and the arguments should be placed after the quote.
Give the shortcut a meaningful name, like Eject CD or something like that, and you'll have a new icon (read below on how to use the cd-rom icon as shown)
Create a Shortcut to Close the CD/DVD Drive
You can follow the same exact instructions as above, but instead of "cdrom open" just substitute "cdrom close".
Assign a Hotkey to the Shortcut
Now that we have a shortcut, we can assign a hotkey to the shortcut by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Properties. On the Shortcut tab you'll see a place to assign the Shortcut key:

I was installing a dvd drive, unhooked main power supply in computer, now when I turn on computer it says it needs a systems reboot disc can you help

The computer can't see the hard drive. IF the hard drive is on the same IDE ribbon as the DVD then you have a jumper problem. You need to look at the old cdrom if there was one and jumper new one the same as old one. (Master, slave or cable select) Also while you were digging around inside your computer did you pull the IDE ribbon to hard drive loose from the drive or the motherboard? Are the power connectors still hooked up? Every hard drive ribbon can have one slave and one master drive. Your hard drive should be the master and the cdrom the slave. Some systems are now set to "cable select" that means that the hard drive ribbon has a master connector and a slave connector and that the device (hard drive or cdrom) becomes a master if connected to one connector or a slave if hooked to the other one. If you go into your bios setup when you turn on the computer you should be able to look an see which of the drives or cdroms is hooked up as master or slave. Some will display this information during bootup posting.

My cdrom drive wont play any cd rom discs, it starts to make a noise then stops

The cdrom is surely bad, it is either you change it or you repair, the lense of the drive must have been damaged.

SPICELOUNGE UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I have the same computer except it is the 2400 Dimension. If you have a win 98 bootdisk which is a lot smaller file and easier to use insert in a:/ startup with cdrom support when its done loading it goes to a:/. When thats done your cdrom drive has been changed to E:/ if you have your XP install disk put it in your cdrom. Ok beside where it says a:/ type in e:/ which changes it to e:/ drive when thats done type in setup and it should start your install there should be a choice to repair at some point click on that and it should repair. If by chance that don't work let me know and we will do something different. You can get a 98 bootdisk at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm just follow instructions how to make the disk.
Let me know
God Bless Greg

LG super multi drive identified as CDROM by Windows XP

First, thank you for the excellent description. I wish more FixYa clients would provide complete information like that.

Unless you are having problems, I wouldn't worry about the product designation in XP since it's LG drive that is identifying it as such during XP's device discovery routine. Your new LG drive can handle all of the different DVD rewritable formats - i.e. DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW - so it appears that it is just using the first as its designator.

In my laptop, my LG DVD writer is designated as follows in Device Manager:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device

LG describes it as a "Slim DVD Super-Multi Drive". I've had no problems with it, and it has worked flawlessly to burn CDs and DVDs.
