I can only get internet in safe mode. I can open a cmd window and ping Yahoo by name and IP address in normal mode, but cannot display a broswer page (IE8 or Chrome) I have scanned in safe mode with the free version of AVG and Malwarebyte (both virus database updated) Turned windows firewall off and still cannot get internet in normal mode. CCleaner registry scan
As you can still get Internet thru the safe mode then on google type REALTEK PCIE GBE FAMILY CONTROLLER open that page. Click on the link with Download Driver PC Pistop/ Library/ Realtek PCIE GBE family controller. Next choose your windows version and the right click Download. Give your email Adress and click ok, go to your mails and confirm by clicking on download link. The driver will be installed and system will restart. Here your Internet must be working normal without safe mode.

With vista I had the same problem, but when I enabled network fileshareing and set up some network drives it started to answer on ping requests, so it should be one of the networking protocols to enable.

Why not use the firewall that comes with Vista. I've tried others and with Vista it seems far easier to use the original. Whay can't you change anything?

Turns out the culprit was Norton blocking internet access after my client didn't get the pay version. He used the add/remove programs to uninstall Norton. I found out that you MUST use the official Norton uninstaller to uninstall Norton. I did this and wam! bam! Internet.. thanks everyone for your suggestions
