Turns out the culprit was Norton blocking internet access after my client didn't get the pay version. He used the add/remove programs to uninstall Norton. I found out that you MUST use the official Norton uninstaller to uninstall Norton. I did this and wam! bam! Internet.. thanks everyone for your suggestions

As you can still get Internet thru the safe mode then on google type REALTEK PCIE GBE FAMILY CONTROLLER open that page. Click on the link with Download Driver PC Pistop/ Library/ Realtek PCIE GBE family controller. Next choose your windows version and the right click Download. Give your email Adress and click ok, go to your mails and confirm by clicking on download link. The driver will be installed and system will restart. Here your Internet must be working normal without safe mode.

How to find a IP address for my emachines laptop

go to start -- run and type in CMD
hit enter to open a black command prompt window

type in "ipconfig" without the quotes and hit enter. This will give you your IP address.

If you need the IP address from your provider that you are using out on the public internet, just go to http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and it will tell you what your external public IP address is.

Cannot get onto the internet

Try to perform the following steps: -

OPen ncpa.cpl and check the status for the connection.
if wireless shows connected, then perform the following steps
  • Boot your computer in Last Known Good Configuration, from advanced Boot menu ("http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode" to know how you can enter in Advanced boot option.). Then try to go online.
  • Boot the computer in Safe Mode With Networking and check are you able to go online?
  • open command prompt (cmd (run as administrator)) and try to get IP and Default Gateway Address vai "IPCONFIG"
  • try to ping IP, DG, www.google.com and 173.194.36.50(which is an IP address of www.google.com), and check what replies you are getting.
  • If all these 4 links are pinging, check for proxy on the browser.
  • If default gateway is not there, then power cycle the computer as well as router.
  • If IP address of the website is not giving any reply, then type the command on command prompt " ipconfig /flushdns" and restart the computer.
  • If you are not getting your IP address then try for these commands " ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew".
  • While pinging the website, if you are getting Request Timed Out, then type the command on the command prompt window and restart the computer " netsh winsock reset".
If still the problem persist, try with new user account.

Wont connect to the internet even though it has an LAN ip and the router recognizes it.

If you can see the router recognize it, would that be a wireless router and you can see it in the connected devices list? or just that the light is on?

Let's start at the beginning. Let's check what ip address you have now. open up a command prompt (Start->Run->cmd then Enter) type "ipconfig". Note these numbers.

1.) Go into Network Connections (Control Panel) 2.) Go into the properties for the adapter you would like to connect with. 3.) Find the TCP/IP for that adapter and click the properties button. 4.) Both "Obtain an IP address automatically" & "Optain DNS server address automatically" 5.) Close those windows and open up a command prompt (Start->Run->cmd then Enter) 6.) type "ipconfig" and note the numbers. Only bad number would start with "169.xx.xx.xx" which means no ip address was distributed. Type "ping yahoo.com" if you get 4 replies then you have a solid internet connection.

hope this help, - Best Regards, -md

Cant connect to the internet.

Click on Start and type CMD. Open CMD and type ipconfig. Check out the IP address V4 for the Local area ethernet adapter or wireless area adpater depending on wireless or wired connection. Any ip address other than of the class 169.254.x.x shoud be considered good. If you have an IP address is any other number other than the above you have a good IP address. to test the internet connectivity type PING www.google.com. If the results are Packets sent 4 Recieved 4 Lost 0 then the issue could be due to Internet Explorer bing corrupt or a firewall blocking the internet access. Power off the computer. Power on the system and as soon as you see the Dell logo please tap the F8 button 3 - 4 times. You'll get to teh Advanced Windows boot option screen. Select safe mode with networking and see if the internet works in the safe mode. If yes then it could be the firewall. Uninstall you antivirus and check.

go to start. run and type in cmd this is a comand prompt . then type ipconfig this will give you your mac address, ip address and default gateway. then try pinging yahoo or google all you have to do is type in the address. the reason i want you to type in ipconfig is to determine weather you are getting a ip address. if after you ping yahoo. you should get 4 hits back . if you still dont get 4 hit back then you need to contact your isp . internet provider

Wireless Internet

I am guessing you are connecting that netgear card wirelessly? Does it get an IP address? Have you tried pinging the router from the laptop once the connection has been made? Try this. Go to the start menu, click the run button and in there type cmd and press enter. Once the black command prompt is open try ping yahoo.com See if that comes up with anything. Also try typing ipconfig and press enter. It will show 3 things.
IP address
subnet
gateway.

The gateway should be your 2wire modem.
Try ping gateway ip and see if that works.

Let me know! thank you.
