I forgot to add that this problem only started happening after I installed a new DVD ROM (d: Drive). It was a replacement for another drive

I have now had the computer turned off for over a week and the fan is still running making it very unlikely that it simply a hot CPU

More than likely the cpu is still hot even after you shut off you computer, so as a saftey precaution the fan is trying to cool it down,(which is a good thing).

If this model Acer has a SATA controller then yes you can, but if it does not have a SATA controller then you can only install a ATA hard drive up to 80 Gb capacity.

Most properly the laptop shutdown itself it due to processor overheat problem. Bring back the laptop to the shop you changef the fan and ask them to check whether the heatsink with fan is tight properly to the processor.

Computer keeps shutting off

the fans must work for the processor not to overheat..

thats why it crashes.. processors or certain hardwares need a certain temperature for it to run.

try repairing the fan it will help. and also clean dust on your board it insulates and increases heat inside causing your pc not to last long
