I have a Craftsman garage door opener and just replaced the plastic gears. I followed the step by step directions but the door is now only opening 2-3 inches, reversing and then going back down. any ideas?

I am having a similar problem, except that my door opened just fine and now won't close. It starts to close, gets about 6 inches from the fully open position and then reverses. I have checked my springs (still good), lubed the rail, checked for sensor alignment. I now the the chain completely disconnected and it still runs for just half a minute before reversing. Please help!

I managed to troubleshoot this myself and got my door working. The problem was that the black rpm wheel was not far enough down on the gear shaft. By unscrewing the screws on the final piece of the assembly on the shaft and then pushing it all more firmly toward the motor and rescrewing in place, I made it so the door operates beautifully.

Be sure to follow the directions step by step.

If you don't have your owners manual for the vehicle you can go to homelink.com To download the instructions.

Very critical to read and follow every step.

The garage door only opens and close 2feet at a time

Sounds like you need a gear kit.

Unplug the unit - take of the cover – if you find white shavings inside – these confirm the diagnosis. .

Get the gear AND sprocket kit.

It’s a good DIY project but you MUST VERY CAREFULLY Follow the instructions step by step.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Garage door only opens 1/3 of the way

DOES THE UNIT STILL RUN WHEN THE DOOR STOPS - YOU MAY HAVE STRIPPED THE GEARS IN YOUR OPENER.

UNPLUG THE UNIT - TAKE OFF THE COVER AND LOOK FOR WHITE SHVINGS INSIDE. IF YOU FIND THEM BUY THE GEAR AND SROCKET KIT.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY STEP BY STEP.

THIS IS NOT A REPAIR YOU CAN DO BY LOOKING AT THE PICTURES (DARN !).

HOPE THIS HELPS

Sears Craftsman Garage door opener does not open or close

The drive gear is most likely stripped. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. The parts number is 41A2817 and is available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It comes with instructions.

Craftsman garage door opens/closes slugishly

COULD BE STRIPPED GEARS OR A BAD MOTOR.

IF YOU OPEN THE HOUSING AND FIND LOTS OF WHITE PLASTIC YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE GEAR KIT.

IF THE MOTOR IS BAD - BUY A WHOLE NEW UNIT.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Garage door opener motor will not open garage door

It sounds like you did a really good job! My Craftsman 1/2 hp gar. dr. opener has a red reset button on it on the l/h side as you are looking at the light/motor from the garage door opening. You have to take the light cover off to be able to see it. My reset button is on the same side as the ground wire. You might check the ground wire while you're there. I really hope that this fixes it for you (and me). I'm quite sure it will as you know your way around the garage door opener already. Good Luck and Let me Know (Please) if it fixed it or not. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Have a Good Day!

Craftsman door opener

Did you align the chain or belt?? If not That would be the problem.

Look at the instructions that came with your gear kit. they have a detailed step by step proceedure.

If it's not the alignment it is probably a bad circuit board.

Hope this helps
