1. Your front panel USB adapter connected with motherboard through a shielded cabel which causes malfunction in data transfer as well as sensing usb drive of higher capacity. try using usb drive provided at rear usb ports this may solve your problem.
2. if not your usb ports might be disabled.check and enable it.

Setting up anything USB & "Device not recognised"

I see a lot of people are having problems with USB. USB is a wonderful standard. However it does have a habit of getting sorta tangled up, generally in the Windows hives/registry.
I am going to show you how to go about installing ANYTHING USB.
First: NEVER EVER, plug in ya USB device before ya install the Software and Drivers.
Second: After installing software & drivers etc. REBOOT.
Third: NOW, plug in your USB device, it should be detected and automatically install the drivers, OR it will ask where they are, navigate to where the files are kept, and they will install, after it has finished, REBOOT.
NOW you should be all good, and ready to use.
Now if you get at any time, "Device not recognised" first, try another USB port, if that doesn't work, & ya keep getting the message .
One thing to try is to go to device manager and TOTALLY remove/uninstall & remove drivers, from ALL USB devices from device manager. then REBOOT.
When windows restarts it will re-install the USB "Layer" all again, all new. Now you can start all again as above.

The emachine model KAWE0 is with operating system windows xp sp1 doesnot recognise any usb device.

Good day sir, hi, usually its one or two ports that does not recorgnise a usb device, but if all ports does not recognise the usb device, check the CMOS setup. check this out;
  • one or two ports does not recognise the usb device, this is a local fault, try to check the CMOS setup, this could also be the port itself is the faulty one having loose connection.
  • all ports does not recognise the usb device, this is a system fault, check again the CMOS setup if the USB port is enabled, check the USB device itself also. to make sure use another pc to test the usb device.
A computer virus can also cause the usb port to malfunction, run an anti virus software, if possible you can reinstall the XP and test the USB port afterward.

If all else fails, you can buy a USB card and plug it on the expansion slot on your PC.

WHEN I TRY TO PLUG IN A HARD DRIVE OR A PRINTER INTO ANY USB SOCKET I GET A MESSAGE SAYING USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNISED BUT IT WILL PICK UP A FLASH DRIVE PLEASE HELP

Is it an external/portable hard drive? Use the rear USB panel, if problems persist, try using your hard drive on another PC. And if you're still having problems, try replacing the USB cables of both the hard drive and printer. If it works on another PC/laptop, buy a PCI USB panel, and install it on the PCI slot of the motherboard. Hope This will help you.

CD drive and USB problems

sounds like a antivirus /firewall/antispyware configuration issue where the porogram will not alow access to removable media in an attempt to prevent viruses from entering your system.check the options and settings within any program mentioned above installed on this system.

the other thing it could be is directly related to the message given, you as a user dont have rights to access, install, read, write removable media and as such you need to change the rights given under that particular user or log in as someone with admin rights, ask the admin to change it.

I have a maxtor 250GB black usb 2.0 hard drive that is no longer recognised by my PC. The usb port works OK with other USB appliances. Its not a high speed 2.0 port but thats not been a problem in the...

Try connecting this drive to another PC/laptop. If the hard disk does not get recognised, you may have to seek help from Maxtor / authorised service personnel to diagonse the issue with the hard drive. Given that there is circuitry in between the actual physical disk and its USB port connector, chances are that the data on the hard disk would be safe and the intermediate circuitry may have suffered a brown-out. Good luck!
