Magnavox 51" Model # 51MP392H/17 Color problems

Well, the first thing I had was a convergence issue. I fixed that, somewhat. I still need IC's but I got everything to line up pretty well. Now there is a haze still. I dug and dug and finally took the screen off and looked at the CRT's while the set was on (bright). I could see the picture in the Red and Green tubes but I couldn't see it in the Blue tube, which makes sense since I couldn't set the Blue to Green convergence due to no blue lines. Does this mean the Blue CRT is dead/dieing? If so, can I replace the Blue CRT with one from a 43", 50", or 63"? Are they the same size? Reason is I can get a 50" for $50 and the service manual that I downloaded is for the sizes I listed earlier which seems to work for my model.
Thanks!

Okay. Thanks. I will do that next. I am still waiting on the IC Chips and still have to take everything apart. Once I get all that done, should be this weekend, I will let everyone know what went on and any implications that came about.

Awesome results! Thanks to all the posts in this forum and thanks to Merlins29 for telling me about the cleaning of the lense. I was able to get ahold of some coupling fluid and took the deltas off and cleaned the heck out of them. The blue had a slight film on it that came off with a little ethyl alcohol and a q-tip. It took about 4 hours due to the dry time of the alcohol (I was being thorough). I have to warn people that you will damage the retaining clips that hold the firing cable into the HV mechanism. I just put the cable in and the cover seemed to hold it fine.

Well, to the point, it works great! Looks brand new now. I bought the thing for $50 and spent another $55 on parts and now I have a nice big like new TV!

Again, thanks to you guys here on this forum!

I have the same problem. Where do you buy the Convergence Kits

  • Anonymous Feb 07, 2009

I just recently got a philips magnavox Rear Projection TV and the picture is really blurry and the color seems off. I've tried adjusting the color control on the menu, but nothing seems to help.  Is it because it needs to be cleaned? or do the bulbs need to be replaced?  Any advice is appreciated, thank you

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your Magnavox 51" Model # 51MP392H/17 Color problems - 2c07611.png chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I have a Mitsubishi WS65611 I understand that the green lines are fixed and the red and blue lines are somewhat adjustable my green lines are no longer fixed in the top right and bottom left of the screen ...

YES, you either have a fuse that went out or the convergence IC went out... Sometimes it just comes unsoldered and causes the same effect. You need to locate this "IC" and tap on it with something non metallic. Like a ruler or a stick. While the tv is running and crosshatch is up on screen. If the lines get close as you tap on the IC or bang on the tv. then fuse is good and the tv might just need to be resoldered on that CONVERGENCE IC. Let me know how this works for you and if you have any questions give me a call @ 502-773-7969 and i can help u out further.

Every thing on the screen is triple

Your symptoms sounds like a damaged convergence IC’s.

There are two and sometimes three very large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink.

Most of the time you can just correct the convergence through the television menu. All that needs to be done is line up the blue and red to the green. If the colors do not move then there may be faulty components in the convergence circuit.

You may want to consult a Television Repair Technician, I would estimate the repair at around $350.00 - $400.00, depending on the repair rates in your area.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

Convergence way off!

Yup, you lost convergence. The only fix is to repair/replace the convergence IC. Some techs will just replace the whole video board.

Convergence issue

try fixing the convergence 2 after your've aligned the convergence 1 - the second (accessed via the set up control) let's you adjust on 9 different axis to align the red and blue tubes to the green. you select which + sign you want to adust by pressing the corresponding number for the + ie 1 for the top left, and 9 for the lower right corner.

good luck (note - you cant change the green only the red and blue, if the whole edge is a mess try moving the image (you need to be in zoom mode, and then access the position adjustment via the pitcure set up screen.

you may have bumped the alignment rings on the convergence yoke on the red tube while doing the coolant as that could cause the symptom youre describing.

Red line on side of screen

there could be a few things if the line is bowed it is a begining of a convergence issue which is fxable by replaing ic in board a tv shop could do that cost is 250.00 . This problem will get a lot worse if it is the convergence. or maybe a tube issue my guess is convergence.

change the convergence ICs also check the resistors right next to the ICs as 1 or 2 of them may be open as well.

Sony HDTV Convergence Issue

No, You will not solve the problem with only changing the convergence IC, associated resisters may also be required.
Beside of that, after spending time to get parts and replace the ICs, you need to make and adjustment the color lines (about 14 lines)
This adjustment without experience will take you about 3 to 4 times and 4 hours each to get thing right (if you areskillfull, most of people failed this adjustment).. The total time spend for this problem would take you full 24 working hours.
I successfully adjusted one set of my big TV (95%, need more more round)), on another set one I failed.

you may need to do convergence to align the colors up.
the only thing other than the ic that need to be replaced are resisters and if the resisters are bad you would not be able to move one of the colors, and blow out the ic you just installed.

Right side convergence

A convergence IC has burned out. If I remember correctly, those Pioneer sets have one huge convergence IC, but that IC only has 5 channels in it so they use another smaller dual STK IC and one half of it is used for the 6th channel and the other half is the vertical output. Look on the convergence board, find the blue convergence jack, identify the blue horizontal channel, follow the traces and replace the IC handling the blue horizontal channel.
