Question about Projection Televisions

Replacing my Color Wheel RCA HDTV DLP M50WH72S

Okay, so my TV keeps flashing mostly in green colors and as one person has put it, it looks like you're watching TV with nightvision goggles on. So me, not knowing anything about these TV's and their maintenance, I automatically thought the projection lamp was the problem but apparently not because I ordered one for $115 online and the problem still continues. Now, I'm thinking that it is the color wheel.

Currently, here is what happens. I turn on the TV and it'll be fine for 5-10 minutes, working great. Then it begin to flash in green and white colors. This flashing keeps getting worse and worse until finally the TV will turn off on it's own. Audio will continue to work though and the power light blinks 5 times, stops, then blinks 5 times again. As it's doing that, the TV makes an odd noise that's kinda hard to explain. It sounds like an airplane is dropping a missile. Like a sound effect on a very old video game.

Okay so once I can find a color wheel for a decent price, where can I find step by step instructions on how to replace this color wheel myself?

If anyone else has any suggestions or any kind of experience on this issue please feel free to add your comments!

SOURCE: New problem... replaced color wheel and lamp still won't work

This set has had issues with the power supply. It may have defective capacitors. This would require disassembly and replacement of parts.

Do you have test equipment and a service manual?

If you have a repair shop
do the repair, your cost may be $300.00- $400.00 to repair.

Parts and manuals can be purchased at:

SOURCE: Samsung HLP6163WX/XAA DLP HDTV - lamp and noise issues

Hello:
Replace the color wheel again, its gone bad again. the clicking is the ballast trying to fire the lamp. The Ballast will not fire the lamp until the color wheel has reported it has reached an RPM of around 9000rpm. This is a normal sound. Most of the time the color wheel will make a loud whining sound when bearings go bad, sounds like a Airplane using reverse thrusters when landing and a even louder sound when it shatters in the housing. Also the reason it may of gone bad so soon is because they make to versions of this color wheel, Bearing type and the Air type. I don't know who installed your color wheel, but it should of came with a small tag or paper of some sort with numbers on it. Most people throw this away when it is very important to let the unit know which type of wheel is being installed to set the parameters for either type of wheel. Most people who install colors wheels themselves to save money do not know this, and the only way to install the new settings is thru the Factory Service Mode. There are also color parameters to input for the type of wheel being used.

This is your basic Color wheel 101..
Hope I gave you some insite of what may of caused your problem...Please leave comment if more info is needed..Lavell

Most DLP TVs have a color wheel. This allows the TV to be manufactured with a single chip to control the color for each spot on the screen and a white light source. As the wheel rotates, the desired color light gets transmitted to the screen. This happens so fast that most people do not see the screen refreshing each color.

Here is one source for a color wheel for your TV: http://chaparral.shopjimmy.com/catalog/product/view/id/200632/s/rca-color-wheel-212184/ . This is a part reclaimed from a TV that was damaged in shipping so it was only used during factory testing. The part number is RCA 212184.

Usually the symptom of a failing color wheel is the TV being very noisy on startup (a whining sound) followed by it shutting down. Although other problems can be involved - for example a power problem going into the assembly with the wheel (there is a motor that turns the wheel).

I hope this helps.

My Samsung 56 DLP picture lost is color and is making a buzzing noise which I suspect is the color wheel. The picture is now black

you need to change the color wheel

Samsung's digital light projection (DLP) televisions use a spinning color wheel to create the colors that are seen on the screen. If the color wheel becomes misaligned during use, it will become damaged and have to be replaced. Replacing the color wheel on a Samsung DLP television can be done at home, once a compatible-sized color wheel has been bought from a TV supply store.Replacing the color wheel yourself will void any Samsung warranty that might be in place, but is the only solution for getting the TV working again in as short a time as possible.
Put on the anti-static grounding strap to keep static electricity from damaging the internal components of the Samsung DLP TV. Turn the Samsung around so that the back is facing you. Make sure the Samsung is unplugged from the AC socket.
2
Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove all of the screws from the back panel. Put the screws aside. Pull off the back panel.
3
Loosen the two screws from each side of the projection bulb's case. Pull the projection bulb out. Put the projection bulb aside. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the left side panel. Pull the side panel and the circuit board attached to it out carefully and put it down so that the cables attached to it have not been pulled out.
4
Take a picture of the power cable's position with the digital camera so that you can put it back correctly later. Pull the power cable out from inside of the Samsung's case so that the center panel is free to be pulled out. Remove the two large headed screws from the center panel with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the top two screws holding the panel to the plastic case using the Phillips screwdriver.
5
Slowly slide the center unit out a few inches. Take a picture of the projector lens' positioning with the digital camera so that you can put it back correctly later. Unplug the two cables from the left side of the center panel. Unscrew the sensor switch using the Phillips screwdriver. Slide the center panel completely out of the Samsung and put it down on the clean cloth. Blow off the color wheel assembly with the compressed air.
6
Use the tweezers to remove the green plug from the top of the color wheel cover. Use the tweezers to remove the two cables at the side that are coming from the color wheel. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws from the top, front and back of the color wheel cover. Slide the color wheel cover straight up to expose the color wheel.
7
Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the three screws holding the color wheel to the color wheel assembly. Lift the color wheel up and out of the color wheel assembly and discard it.
8
Position the replacement color wheel in the color wheel assembly. Reassemble the color wheel and reassemble the color wheel assembly. Put the color wheel assembly back into position in the rear of the Samsung DLP TV. Reassemble the Samsung DLP TV. Plug the Samsung DLP TV back in for power. Turn the Samsung on and enjoy seeing the colors displayed properly again now that you have replaced the color wheel.

RCA HD61LPW42 - no picture

I haven't worked on an RCA DLP but have on Samsung DLP, based on your description it sounds like the color wheel is bad. Take the back off and turn on TV make sure its not a fan making the noise ,but most likely its the "wheel" it is inside the light engine probably right next to where the lamp is plugged in. If the whine comes from this area definitely the wheel.

Color is bad after installing color wheel in samsung dlp tv

Most times color does not to be reset. If you have a very ugly green or blue picture, then you did not pull the jumper on the dm board. This jumper must be removed when a bering type color wheel has be replaced with a new airless bering color wheel.
