I must agree with ashare. A CD holds 700 MegaBytes, a DVD holds 4.7 GigaBytes (In simple math terms, 1000 MegaBytes makes 1 GigaByte) You can store SO much more information on a DVD than you can a CD and the cost and proceedure to install these items is more or less the same. A DVD burner will give you more bang for your buck!

Please rethink on your idea to buy a new CD burner because a DVD burner doesn't cost you much these days. You can buy a DVD burner which will also serve the purpose of playing DVD apart from burning pictures. I will help you to install it once you decide on what to buy.

Find your CD/DVD writer from any computer shop and; install the software that come with the hardware after proper installation of the hardware using the manual. then you will be able to write to your media medium (cd/dvd).

This item plays cd & burns cd, but does not play DVD.

Either this device is not DVD burner or you do not have installed on your computer the software to play DVDs. Possible also that device is not installed correctly or the drivers are not the correct ones.

My HP desk top is almost a year old. The dvd/cd burner is a real pain. Regardless which program CD are burned with they are indicated as successful burns, but in playing them the songs are chopped up,...

There probably is no way to fix this. If it is the problem, getting and installing a new cd drive is very simple. You can buy a new drive here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=600&name=Blu-Ray-Burners&Order=PRICE. To remove the old one, all you need to do is open up the side, unscrew the one or two screws holding it to the case and unplug the two cables that are attached to it. The install the new one, slide it in attach the cables and put the screws back in. It is as simple as that and should work just fine after that. If you don't need the Blu Ray part of the drive you can always save some money by buying one of these instead: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=5&name=CD-DVD-Burners.

Pc wont play cd or dvd

On many CD-Roms, or burners, there is a plug on the back that is for Digital Audio. It is a rectangular shaped plug. Some PC's require that a cable is attached from the back of the burner, to either the on-board audio (on the motherboard), or to the sound card that may be installed. If you have any further questions, just let me know :)
