Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

My home heaer is out of service..........

My heater is at the roof and my house is 2 stories.
The heater was working good, but now from 2 days, is working good with the air condition and the fan, but in heater don't work.
I'm in Las Vegas, the temp inside of my home is 40 deg. now at 7/pm.
Some they tell me the problem is the termostat or the light for the gas at the roof.
What kind of test, can I do, to know if the termostat is Ok.
Excuseme my English, but I can read and understand much more.
Thanks very much, I'll be waiting for your opinion.

Is you unit a heat pump if so it may have tripped off on high head pressure . check your filter and if its dirty replace it then go up on the roof and look for a red button and if it has it press it and the unit should come back on.

Rtg74pvn2 rheem tankless water heater gas problem

1) You want the truth: Forget tankless.
There are many tankless water heaters with insoluble problems.
And endless problems.
Rheem knows it.

2) Do you really expect your home computer to work flawless after replacing motherboard?
Get your money back from Rheem, or get a full replacement.

3) OR fix water heater yourself today: Install tank-type gas water heater for $350 from local box store.
FYI: Do not buy Rheem, Richmond, Ruud, GE as these units from Rheem have problems that require service technicians.
Instead buy Whirlpool, American, State, Craftmaster, Reliance, Kenmore, as these units from AO Smith have fewer problems and can be repaired by homeowner using simple part replacement.

Had three 50-gal American Standard water heaters installed Dec. 2009 Two upstairs in attic, one downstairs at ground level. Attic location used because heaters being replaced were up there. Upstairs...

Plumber is right.
Problem is not amount of air in attic. Problem is how hot the air is.
Oxygen molecules separate apart in very hot air and pilot light goes out since there is not enough oxygen density to support combustion.

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Attic-Ventilation-and-Pilot-Outage-in-Gas%20Water-Heaters.pdf

More ventilation is needed.
Plumber is not ventilating expert, and not responsible for attic ventilation that builder failed to install. Plumber should do a survey of location before installation to make sure gasoline vapors are not stored nearby, but summer attic ventilation is gray area until more general-public folks become aware of problem. Hotter summers temperatures will spread that information.

Hire local home center to install roof vents AND soffit vents.
Note: You also need soffit vents.
Remember a vent on the roof is like sucking air out of a coke bottle. The roof vent is no good unless air can also enter the attic from another vent located in the soffit.

Another solution is electric water heater for very hot locations.
Or install solar-assisted water heater.

Wanting to install a Rinnai Infinity HD200i, looking fot details on flue installation. How high does it need to pertrude through roof. Cheers Bob

Good cheer, Bob.
GENERALLY speaking: on a direct vent water heater, meaning a passive air flow pipe up through roof, the vent stack should be higher than roof peak and should not have tree branches or any kind of living-space air intake (window, chimney) or air conditioner within 10 feet, or other exhaust nearby. Local codes affect exact location and height. For example areas with high wind might be different than other areas of country and require certain height, since the wind can stop combustion exhaust from exiting house, and topple over vent stacks, and push odorless poison CO gas into home where it will kill the parakeet and set off CO alarm.

This being said. Each model tankless can have different venting requirement.
I would contact Rinnai, and read installation manual, read the required maintenance, and make sure you have qualified service technician available in area to save posting on fixya next year.
Bosch has a pdf for testing proper draft on certain models: http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bosch_Checking_the_draft.pdf

Upvote the help.
And take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.
For a price, expert works with you while you work on water heater or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

Upsstair shower doesn't supply continuous hot water, downstair works great. Water pressure problem?

It could be a water pressure problem but most water supply companies put out enough pressure for a 2 story house (or even 4 stories) easily. Can you clarify what you mean by continuous? Does the water get cold, on and off (i.e. no hot water) or does it vary in temperature mildly?

The flue should NEVER go straight up. Go up one foot, put a 90 then another 1-2 feet into a tee with condensate (rain) removal then go straight up. Make sure there is enough combustion air. Instructions are in the manual.

After use, while its refilling, my Rheem hot water heater makes a banging sound inside. Anyone have this issue?

I suspect the noise is being caused by expanding metal groaning or 'popping' due to the expansion. We have a metal roof on our home and heating and cooling are always accompanied by similar noises that are inaudible inside the house but catches our attention if we are on the porch.

Gas water heater pilot goes out only on very hot days

It sounds more like the pilot is being blown out by drafting. If there is any open shielding at or below the pilot light line , it is very possible for it to blow out.Hold a tissue between your fingers and ck for drafts around the burner and pilot area. If it's the case, The drafting needs blocking.the exhaust will still exhaust because of the heat it generates and confined location in the combustion chamber. Good Luck.

Eractic Power Vent Gas Water Heater

Th epproblem you are most likely have is from a safety called a flag switch usually located either in the blower or right past it. When you unplug and replug you reset the switch. Sequence of events.  1 fan comes on. 2 switch is made from the airflow of the fan.  3 ignitor come on 4. main gas valve opens and ignitor starts flame.
You are being stopped at step 2 when the fan does not move with the air. This shuts off and out the water heater from calling again.  Find the fan switch and make sure it moves easily. They get dirty and also dry from lack of lube. Good luck.
