Question about Insignia IS-LCDTV32 32 in. Television

Sound but not picture - capacitors look okay, hair dryer didn't w

New Year's eve my 32" Insignia 3-year old LCD HD tv flat panel worked fine, the next morning, no picture. The LCD doesn't glow, so can't see the menu or anything. The power light is either solid red when off or solid blue when on, no flashing. The capacitors look fine on the power board, no swollen tops or discoloration, and I tried the hair dryer trick 4 times but didn't work. This would make me think it's not the power board?

These forums have been extremely helpful, I knew nothing before reading the posts here, but I can't figure this one out?

The TV has no backlight at all, not glow. How can it be the power supply if the sound works fine and the capacitors all look normal?

  • alabama1996 Jan 09, 2009

I appreciate the info! Is there something I can look at on the main pcb to tell if there's something wrong with it? Can I pull it out and see if a capacitor or circuit is blown?

If the pcb also looks fine, should I try buying some new capacitors for the power supply and try replacing them, or do you think I'll just have to buy a whole new power supply? I'd rather spend a few bucks on capacitors rather than $200 on the whole new power supply.

  • alabama1996 Jan 09, 2009

I wondered what "the flashlight test" was!? Yes, I can see the menu with a flashlight, what the heck does that mean?

  • alabama1996 Jan 09, 2009

Man, you've been so much help, and I"m getting a good education in TV repair, this is very cool!

So the power supply and inverter are 2 separate things, is the power supply the "power board"?

How do I check for the 24 volts? I'm guessing there's a voltage meter of some kind I could buy at home depot. I'm guessing the only way to test it is when the TV it on? But I have no idea where to place the device to test for voltage, are the pictures online anywhere?

I've seen the power boards for sale online, is there anywhere in particular you'd recommend buying that part?

  • alabama1996 Jan 10, 2009

It's an Insignia (best buy) IS-LCDTV-32. I really love it, the picture has been amazing especially with HD satelite.

I'm looking at what I think the power supply, the thing right in the middle when I open up the back panel. You can see it in the picture below. I don't see a specific number on it though. One number is repeated twice on two of the yellow things, 3220PQ....

  • alabama1996 Jan 10, 2009

    I don't see a serial number either.

  • alabama1996 Jan 10, 2009

Which side is the inverter, the thing on the right with all the wires going into it?

These are the numbers on the power board:
    BCK-100-02L4-050901

    3220PQ-X26-TDKX-0540

    B1000F838E
    E7502601143

  • alabama1996 Jan 10, 2009

here's the original picture again, is the inverter circled in white or red?

  • Peggy Green Jan 10, 2009

One day the picture was there and the next nothing. It first started with the horizontal hold, then the picture started to roll, then it blacked out. Sound but no picture.

  • alabama1996 Jan 10, 2009

I really appreciate the help, you've been awesome. Unfortunately, I'm still confused, I don't know what to do next. I don't know how to test the power supply.

  • alabama1996 Jan 11, 2009

okay, cool, I'll get one asap.

  • alabama1996 Jan 11, 2009

looks like Radio Shack sells mulitmeters for $20, I'll get one today

  • crushgroove4 Jan 11, 2009

I have the same type of television... a 32'' insignia. Mine is a LCD and as of today it is not working. I had it since sept of 07. The picture went out and the screen is flashing colors. White,Black,Red,Green, then Blue. The Sound works fine and i'm not sure what is work. Can SomeOne Help Me?

  • alabama1996 Feb 12, 2009

Sorry this took so long, been real busy with work, I ended up paying a TV repairman $85 to come tell me what the problem is. He tested the Power Supply with his voltage meter and got 24 volts all over it, looked it over and determined it was fine. He decided 95% sure that it's the Voltage Inverter master which I can buy for about $100 online. I'm still taking a chance that it's the problem, but he says I can return the part if it doesn't work. Any thoughts?

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

I've got ECXF5501-2 PCB for the master (left).

But it doesn't look like the part, I just took the inverter out, the capacitors look fine, nothing so far looks bad.

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

I don't even see that part in my TV, the voltage inverter, it looks nothing like that! This is starting to get annoying.

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

I guess I'll just sell it as parts

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

Should I try replacing some of the capacitors, even if they don't look bad, could that be it?

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

The tech told me there were 2 inverters, the main one, the big one that is the main inverter is the one under the metal tin on the left side of the picture, and I guess a smaller slave inverter in the upper right that is smaller. I've looked at both of them and can't see anything wrong, no bad caps, burn marks, anything out of the ordinary. Very strange.

  • alabama1996 Feb 13, 2009

could one be bad if the caps look okay and the piece in inverter in general looks okay?

If you feel the power supply is good then the next item would be the main pcb. if the back light is coming on with no video then the t-con board is bad but power supply seems to be most common for me.

It it possible to be the supply simply because the supply is what drives each circuit. It is possible that some voltages are present and others are not. if you think the supply is good go for the main pcb

  • Chuck Jan 09, 2009

do this for me. power the the set on, push the menu button then take a flash light and place all the up to the screnn and see if you see the words from the menu. you may want to chat live on this one but do that and get back with me so we can resolve this. look very closely at he screen when yo are doing this.

  • Chuck Jan 09, 2009

you have just verified the main pcb and T-Con pcb is working. It takes approx 24 volts DC from power supply to drive what is called the inverter which produces the back light. You must verify the 24 Volts from the power supply. If you have the 24 Volts then suspect a defective inverter. If you do not have the 24 volts at the power supply then the power supply is defective. If you determine that the inverter is the cause then it will not be worth repairing. You may be able to disconnct the inverter from the supply and check for the 24 volts to make sure it is not loading the supply down. Do not attempt to check voltages at the inverter itself.

  • Chuck Jan 09, 2009

Yes, the inverter and the power supply are two separate things. There are two different power supplies for these. What is you excact model and serial number. I may have one. Look on the power supply as well for any numbers =. Most of them start with a 6

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

that's it and the inverter is that black part over to the side.

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

does you board have this written on it 782-L32U25-200B anywhere

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

this is the part number I have 6LK02320W0I . Is yours the same?

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

yes, if it built into the panel. That looks like it. If there is not one on the other side then would be it. That power pcb is about 60.00 buck. I don;t have one though. I have the other type.

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

yes, that looks like the inverter. some sets have two. one on each side but this one may only have one.

  • Chuck Jan 10, 2009

at this point my friend, you will need a digital multi meter a cheap one will do so we can take some voltage checks.

  • Chuck Feb 12, 2009

If the 24 volts is present and based on the flash light trick then the only thing left is the inverters but to my knowledge the inveters are part of the panel itself. What part numbers do you have for the inveters?

  • Chuck Feb 13, 2009

I was wondering because I have never seen a part number for the inverters. they are part of the LCD panel.

  • Chuck Feb 13, 2009

one or both of them is open

Your probably having what cable guys call a SNR ( signal to noise ) issue. There's no way to know unless you call your cable provider. The SNR should be 32 and above with zero pre/post errors. In case you want to ask the tech what they are.

My 32-inch lcd tv from sharp has no picture but audio works fine. No picture ever comes up, not even the "please wait" message. Whats going on?

My 3 year old Sharp LC-40C32U would start up fine but within a minute would go dark (audio continued fine). For a while I could turn the set off and on again and it would be fine, but over time this became less effective. My solution, which has worked for a week now, was to a) unplug the set's power cord; b) after 3 minutes plug it back in and turn the set on; c) on the remote hit MENU and slide over to SETUP (3 clicks to the right if the screen is dark) and one up to RESET; d) hit ENTER and follow the prompts. This puts the set in it's factory configuration so you will have to rescan for channels. Worked for me.

Getting a No Sync message on my television

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps
