Question about HP Photosmart 2610 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Software won't fully install

My hard drive died on me and when reinstalling everything I found that I had lost my CD for the HP printer. I can find the MAC one, but why? After having an invigorating conversation with technical support, I find I no longer have a warranty and will have to pay so ANY help is appreciated. Here's what I have done:

Equipment: HP Photosmart 2610
XP Service Pack 2

Steps taken:
1. Downloaded software called "rub_w01_Americas_Euro1.exe"
2. Tried to install, received the error above.
3. Looked at HP site for ideas and found the "AccessDenied" "fixer" ...downloaded and tried. did not work. I followed the directions.

I have done this SEVERAL times and I have had no luck. Does anyone have any magic for this? I'm ready to hire a bloodhound to find that CD at this point!

Thanks in advance for anything!!!

Geez I thought I had put the stupid error. It is "Access is Denied" and it shows up around 94% of total install. Then it does a nice little log and uninstalls everything for me - isn't that sweet?

Thanks for the file. I installed it and ran it and then tried to install the software again - I almost immediately received the error again. It normally took me to 96% or so, I"m guessing something changed, but not for the good ;(

    Thanks for trying!

I had done that - below is the list of instructions from Gia at HP - I have done all this in the correct order. I am not sure it is possible to fix this thing anymore!

If you know of any other tricks, please let me know!

    Mary Ann
    Dear MaryAnn,

This e-mail is a follow-up to your recent Chat session. As promised
earlier, here is the solution to the issue you mentioned during our
    chat session.

Follow the steps in the below provided order:

    1.Uninstall the software
    2.Install the patch
    3.Restart the computer
    4.Install the patch
    5.Restart the computer
    6.Install the patch
    7.Restart the computer
8.Turn off the Terminate and Stay Resident programs
    9.Delete the Temp files.
    10.Disable the firewalls and antivirus.
    11.Install the printer software.

    Step 1:
    1. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from the web link given below:

    2. Install this utility after the download completes.

    3. A shortcut for the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility is created
on the Programs menu under the Start menu. To run the Windows Installer
    Clean Up Utility:

    4. Click Start(Windows), click Programs, and then click the shortcut for the "Windows Installer Clean Up Utility".

    5. When you do this, you receive a dialog box that displays the following message:

"Continuing further will make permanent changes to your system. You
may need to reinstall some or all applications on your system that used
the Windows Installer technology to be installed. If you do not want to
proceed, please press the 'Exit' button now. Choosing 'Remove' will
    make the permanent changes."

    6. The dialog box lists all the currently installed programs that
are registered with Windows Installer. Locate all the HP software files
to remove from the computer and click on remove and click Ok.

    7. Once you have removed all the HP software files, restart the PC
if you recieve or do not recieve any prompt. This should remove the
complete HP software from your PC.

    Step 2:

=== Download and install the Access Denied patch ===

A tool has been developed to scan and fix registry permissions for
specific registry keys where the software installer usually writes HP

Please visit the following URL to download the Access Denied patch:

Download and save the file "AccessDeniedUtility_1_3_4.exe" to the Desktop. Next, double-click the file to run it.

Note: We need to install the patch three times because every time we
install the patch, the computer allows 33% and so that if we install
the patch three times, we get 100% acceptance and thus we wont get any
    'Access denied' error message.

Please Restart the computer every time we install the patch.

Step 8: Turn off the Terminate and Stay Resident programs

On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ).
Type msconfig in the Start Search text box and then press Enter on the keyboard.
On the User Account Control window, click Continue . The System Configuration window appears.
    Click the General tab.
Select the Selective Startup check box.
Make sure that the Load Startup Items check box is cleared.
    Click the Services tab.
Select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
    Click Disable All .
    Click OK .
Click Restart to apply the changes. The computer automatically restarts.

Step 9: Clear the temporary files and folders

The Disk Cleanup utility deletes temporary Internet files,
downloaded program files, items in the temporary folder, and files
created by other Windows tools. The utility also empties the Recycle
Bin and removes optional Windows components that are not in use.
On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ).
Click All Programs , click Accessories , click System Tools , and then click Disk Cleanup . The Disk Cleanup Utility appears.
On the Disk Cleanup Options window, select My files only or Files from all users on this computer .
In the Drives drop-down list, select the drive to clean up and then click OK .
the Disk Cleanup utility report that is appears, select the check boxes
next to unnecessary components and then click OK to remove them.

Step 10: Disable the firewalls and antivirus.

To disable the anti virus software :
On the bottom right corner of the screen right click on the icon of your anti virus software and select the option disable.

    To Diable Firewalls:
    click on Start button--> control panel--> Security-->Windows firewall--change settings--> off.

Please turn off any messenger icons present in the system tray.

Step 11: Install the printer software.

Here is the weblink to download the software:

You will find the Download only button.
Click on Download only not on Install now => Choose Save not Run => Save it to your Desktop.

Once the download completes just double click on the downloaded icon
and proceed with onscreen intructions to install the printer

You should have gotten an installation CD with the printer. First, find the installation CD. Once you have that, follow the steps given by the tech.
