HP Pavilion ze5500 - Laptop won't recognize hard drive.

I have a laptop of course it's an HP Pavilion ze5500. Right now since it won't recognize the hard drive I have to run Linux from a disc. I'm not to fond of Linux so I was wanting to install Windows XP, but when I go to install Windows XP from the disc, it says no hard disk. When I go to BIOS to look at the hard disk it says [none]. I tried to manually enter it by entering the cylinders, heads, and sectors myself but it still won't recognize it. The hard drive is the original hard drive that came with the laptop. Does anyone know why this this problem could occur, and if so, is there anyway to correct it.

Anyway to make it register? I also have a 60gb hard drive that didn't come with the laptop but it does the same thing with that one too.

  • illbeatboxyo Jan 06, 2009

The thing is that the hard drive still isn't recognized by the computer even when running linux. The only reason linux is running is because it is reading it off the disc in the cd-rom drive. So when I go into the BIOS it still registers as no hard disk. When I reset BIOS to default and then try to run a windows disc it says no hard disk found and then just stays at that screen until it is powered down. I'm downloading an ultimate boot disc for windows now do you think it would clean the hard drive?

  • illbeatboxyo Jan 06, 2009

Ok, I flipped the laptop over and stuck a paperclip in the battery reset hole. I then turned on the laptop and enetered BIOS. I restored it to its defaults by hitting the corresponding key which was F9. I then saved changed and exited by hitting F10. I entered the windows disc and waited for a DOS prompt. The only thing that happened was it said "Hard Disk not found, recovery can't continue" and after that it said hit any key to contimue. I hit the spacebar and it restarted. I rinsed and repeated only to find the same thing happening... Any other suggestions? Maybe it was because it was a recovery disc and not just a standard windows disc?

I guess if you don't mind sending the files needed that would be great. Last night I created a windows xp sp3 2009 disc and tried to install. It went through all the installations and then when it went to boot up, it couldn't. I would guess because the hard drive wasn't being acknowledged it didn't save the loaded files. So anyways are you saying there is a windows version that can be ran off the DVD-RW it's burnt to, ad if so, would it have to be burned in ISO format?

Hi. Once I had this similar problem with a HP Pavilion dv9000. "No Operating System"; "Windows Recovery Console cannot continue because there's no HD present..press F3 to Exit". No progress with Safe Mode nor Command Prompt, etc.
Then I went to the Bios, change tab to "System Configuration" and change the "Sata Native Support" to disable, whitch says that by changing to disable the HD would work better if the Operating System are Win2000 and Win9x.
Hit "Safe and Exit" and the computer started normaly!
I relly don't know how or why. It just work.
I don't know if would work for Linux (mine had Windows XP) and don't know the Bios view of your laptop. But you can explore and give it a try.
Hope this helps.
God Bless You!

Pc has been configured for linux which mounts hda1.
go in bios set to default restart with xp disk ...choose repair which goes to a dos platform(c:/prompt
type in at the prompt fdisk .... follow the instructions ...dont forget to format before exit ...restart..you should be able to boot/install from xp now.if not go into bios and check boot sequence ...select cd first boot...save and exit..boot again with xp os in drive.

ok sounds like hd has bad sectors get a recovery disk that boots up .if youre really stuck for windows I have xp live cd with network support.

as you know with linux you just insert the disk and let it run.

I can send you the setup file via email attach If you want.youll need to create a boot disk and install the files first of course..

if you get yourself a copy of spotmau it will give you a good insight into what the problem may be.

My HP DV9740Us entertainment laptop will only recognize one external hard drive at a time! If i plug in another via usb it won't pick it up in My computer but the computer makes the sound as if it did...

If these drives are internally powered by the USB hub, two devices will not be recognised. ie: you can have as many pendrives as you like and they will be seen, because they draw little power from the hub, however, a larger external hard drive requires more power (some of these in fact have two usb connectors to power them). which is why your laptop will only recognise one drive at a time:

Solution: If you can get an externally powered usb drive, this should work.Another and possibly cheaper way would be to get an externally powered USB hub, which would solve the problem

you may have to assign a letter to the unseen drive manually: goto start menu and right click on my computer/ select manage/ select storage/ select disk management/ right click on the drive in question and select change drive letter and paths/ then give it an unassigned letter and that should do it. hope this helps:)

My Hp Pavilion All in One Ms214 states operating system not found. Enter the bios and it isn't recognizing my hard drive. It states 0mb. It is a western digital caviar blue 320 gig.

Remove the hard drive from the laptop, and re-seat the hardware back in place. Turn the computer on and see if the hard drive will come to life, if this fails the hardware will need to be replaced.

Can I replace orig hp ze1115 20GB hd w/60GB hd?

No the bios should be able to read the drive fine. The problem could be with the computer's motherboard. You should check to see if the original drive and new drive is detected in another system. Or you can try accessing them via an external casing / adapter.

HP Pavilion zv6100 laptop CMOS will not recognize the HD

You could have a faulty disk controller. Try inserting a different working hard disk into the HP and see if it can detect it in the BIOS. If not then the disk controller is faulty and this is a motherboard problem. A replacement motherboard may not be worth it, put your money towards a new laptop and put the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an USB external hard drive.

Im using hp dv6700t laptop,i want to install xp on my laptop

Your laptop has a SATA hard drive and windows XP doesn't recognize those drives cause the operating system came out before those drive were made.

Follow these steps I found thru google to get windows xp sp3 to recognize your drive:

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-39282-xp-can-t-recognize-hard-drive-for-os-install

You'll have to use a program to do this but people explain how to do it on that page plus the program is free.

Hp pavilion ze5500 display monitor still doesn't work

IT could be a motherboard problem with the function key that controls the switching of the video infomation between the LCD screen and the external video connector.
It could be the function key circuitry on the motherboard that controls the back lighting levels on the LCD.
