If you have a Chraftsman/Liftmaster:
1.Check to see if the door is running correctly.
A. Run the door down and pull the emergency release. See if the door will run easily by itself.
1. If it runs hard by hand try lubricating the rollers and hinges with silicone spray or some form of lubricant (not WD 40) And be sure you lubricate the rial and the chain on the operator
2. If the door is heavy and falls back to the ground, you probably have a spring issue (either broken or needs more tension) in this case call a professional door repair company in your area.
B. If the door runs fine then check the up and down force on your operator (the box that hangs from the ceiling). If the light bulb(s) on your operator are on the front and/or back, the force adjustment screw is on the back of the operator. If the lights are on the sides of the operator then the force adjustment screw is on the right side (looking from the back of the operator and facing the garage door). Turn the light blue adjustment screw with the up arrow to a higher number.
C. If this does not solve your problem the top bushing could be going out of your operator. Open the case and see if a lot of black filings are on the top of the big gear. If so the gear assy. will have to be replaced part # 41C4220A

Liftmaster GDO goes up 1/2 way and stops, springs are fine.

The Liftmaster openers have 4 movement switches, a )opening and b) closing limit and c) opening and d) closing force. First check the door for smooth operation by opening the door by hand (disconnect from the opener with the release cord). Any binding should be felt this way. It is possible for a binding hinge, roller or torsion springs to add too much drag and cause the force switch to shut off the motor. Hinges, roller shafts and torsion springs should be lubricated at least annually with a non oily spray (silicone or teflon spray). Not WD-40 or 3-in-1! A light band of lube should be applied to the torsion spring coils. If the door can be operated smoothly by hand, then adjust the closing force switch 1/4 turn at a time. This is a safety device do not use it to overcome another problem!

Door only opens 6in

There should be 2 or 3 knobs/screws on the side to adjust torque to lift and to let down the door. Sounds like you need to increase the lift torque setting. If its maxed you can try greasing the rollers/wheels to help remove the drag. If still does not lift it then you may need a bigger motor (1hp) or you can add some springs to help lift it. Check your sensors too. Make sure they aren't being tripped at 6" up.

My Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener does up about 4 inches and stops. When I press the opener again it goes down and reopens all the way. What is wrong with it?

Check your door springs to make sure you don't have a broken spring. Remove the cover from the opener motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if this is going bad. On the rear of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' control. Increase this just a bit. This will compensate for door springs getting tired.

I have Craftsman ½ HP Garage Door Opener Model 139.18458D. It reopens immediately after closing. Sometimes it works normally, and sometimes gives this problem. I have tried adjusting the close force,...

It sounds like the door is traveling too far in the down direction. When it hits the floor the safety causes it to reverse to the open position. You need to adjust the 'down limit' not the force.

It sounds like the door springs may be mis-adjusted. Release the doors from the opener and try raising and lowering them manually. They should not try to rise on their own.

Garage door chain is sagging

If the chain is adjusted properly the chain will sag slightly on one side when the door is closed and on the other side when it is open. It should not sag enough that it is dragging on the T-rail. You can adjust it at the trolley. If you over tighten it you will hear a clicking sound when the opener opens or closes.
