Question about HP Printers & Copiers

7 Answers

Have HP Photosmart C4200 all in one. When I changed the cartridges recently I went through the alignment routine but now every time I start the copier I have to run an alignment page, I scan it and each time it comes up with the message that it couldn't locate or didn't work or something. How do I get rid of this pain so that when I start up the maching I can just make copies without all the scan business. I only use the machine for copying - nothing else. Thanks for a reply. john

Thta is because you never completed the alignment procedure.

This is an all in one, after you print the alignment page, you need to place the printed page on the scanner, do a scan, and complete the alignment procedure.

Restart printer alignment from printer tools on Programs, after printing alignment page, follow instructions and place page on scanner, until procedure is complete.

Hello,

Below is a partial entry of the help document at HP. The complete text can be found by clicking on this link here.

Essentially, there is no easy Trick to clearing this issue. The most common error made by users it in replacing both cartridges at the same time. Each cartridge should be replaced individually. Once completed the printer will want to execute a print head alignment test. This print out will include instructions on selecting the numbered lines that line up most exactly. Then you would enter the corresponding number.

Bypassing or interrupting this alignment test after replacing cartridges will cause error messages such as yours. So, if you did this out of ignorance or confusion, remove each cartridge one at a time using the method descrbed below. When both have been removed and reinstalled and the alignment process completed you should be error free. Should you still receive this error, remove and clean each cartridge using the method described below, one cartridge at a time.

If after completing all the steps below, you still receive the error message, your printer has a larger problem that is internal hardware related. You can either replace the printer or have it serviced by HP. Most people opt to replace the printer as an error such as this at the internal hardware level usually indicates that the printer has reached the end of its usable life span. If this is happening prematurely, have it serviced under warranty. Printer warranties are usually one year from HP. If you purchased using a credit card you may have an extended warranty. Check with your card company right away for information on any extended warranty you have from using your Credit Card.

Solution one: Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges

  1. Turn the product on.
  2. Make sure to have letter or A4 unused, plain, white paper loaded in the input tray.
  3. Open the ink cartridge door.
NOTE: Make sure that the carriage holding the ink cartridge moves to the right. If it does not move to the right, turn the product off. If it is a new product, make sure all the packaging material is removed. Close the ink cartridge door and then turn the product on again. The carriage should move to the right. Figure 1: Opening the ink cartridge door CAUTION: The product must be turned on before the ink cartridge door is opened. If the product is off when the ink cartridge door is opened for access to the ink cartridges, the product will not release the cartridges. The product can be damaged if the ink cartridges are not docked safely before removal.
  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on an ink cartridge to release it. The error message should indicate the problem cartridge by displaying an icon that represents it.
    • The tri-color ink cartridge is in the slot on the left.
    • The black or photo ink cartridge is in the slot on the right.
Figure 2: Pressing down on an ink cartridge to release it 1 - Ink cartridge slot for the tri-color print cartridge 2 - Ink cartridge slot for the black and photo ink cartridges
  5. Pull the ink cartridge toward you out of its slot.
  6. Make sure the tape has been removed from the cartridge. If the tape has not been removed, remove it now. Figure 3: Removing the tape CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or reattach the tape.
  7. Hold the cartridge with the HP logo on top.
  8. Reinsert the ink cartridge into its slot by gently pushing the upper part of the ink cartridge forward until it clicks into the socket. CAUTION: When installing the ink cartridge, do not rest your hand on top of the product for leverage. This might cause the carriage to lift out of position. Figure 4: Incorrectly grasping the top of the product for leverage Figure 5: Pushing the cartridge in firmly
    • When installing the tri-color ink cartridge, slide it into the left slot.
    • When installing a black, photo, or gray photo ink cartridge, slide it into the right slot.
Figure 6: Tri-color cartridge in the left cartridge slot and black cartridge in the right cartridge slot
  9. Close the ink cartridge door.
If the error message persists, continue to the next solution.

Hello John
its really quite simple, check that the cartridges are seated properly first of all, power off the printer and remove the USB lead from the PC, then uninstall the printer software and restart the PC so that changes are made in the registry.
Start the PC again and reinstall the printer software (connect the printer lead when prompted) then realign the cartridges and print a test page!!! your problem should now be solved

Good luck and kind regards

At the time when allignment comes out you have to place the allignment sheet on the scanner up side down and then press the scan button.and wait till the on/resume button stops blinking.do it two times continuisously.

Try a semi full reset

1. Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on and wait for 20 seconds.

2. Then, press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord. Continue holding until it displays Semi Full Reset message in the front panel of the All in one

See if the issue is resolved.

Hi
If you have recently changed one or more of the cartridges you may need to align the print head, the following steps explain the process:
To align printer from the printer display
1. From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon, and then touch Tools.
2. On the Tools menu, touch the down arrow to scroll through the options, and then touch Align Printer.
3. Follow the instruction on the screen.
To align printer from the printer software
On Windows:
a. From the Start menu on your computer, click All Programs, click HP.
b. Click the HP Photosmart 5520 series folder, click HP Photosmart 5520 series.
c. Under Print, double-click Maintain Your Printer.
d. Under the Device Services tab, double-click Align Printheads.
These instructions were copied from the manual at the following link

HP Photosmart with FAX C410B. When I do an alignment test is comes up with the error message 'alignment failed'. I have tried taking the cartridges out and cleaning them but this has not worked....

Best thing to do is use the printer driver software to do a nozzle check. If the output has a problem, run the procedure to clean the nozzles. There is also the possibility if you are using refilled cartridges the quality of the cartridge housing has itself deteriorated making changes in the nozzle & air hole so the only way you can confirm is by using new original cartridge replacement.

Take out the print cartridge. Clean the points on the cartridge with cotton swab and try using it again.

HP photosmart C4200 - alignment disable

I've run into this problem. The first simple thing to look at is the aligment page itself. Does it have colors on it or is it strictly greyscale/black and white? If your color cartridge is empty/a knockoff/not installed correctly, the printer will just print the alignment page in black/white and not necessarily notify you of a problem. However, the cartridges won't align if the aligment page isn't printed in color.

This is clearly a screw-up by HP, because there is nothing to notify you of this problem in the software or manual. The printer will automatically print an aligment page, and then tell you to scan it. If they did it right there would be some error message notifying the user that it couldn't print an aligment page rather than print one that is worse than useless.

HP Photosmart 3310 printer shows all ink cartridges need replaced

If you ran the ink cartridge refill routine, from your desktop using the utility supplied by HP, this should not occur, so try running the head cleaning and alignment routines and see if this clears up the problems.

I am assuming that all your cartridges are relatively full and trouble free and that the printer has been successfully and recently used, prior to your replacement of the one new cartridge.

Sometimes, if the printer has been idle for some time without use, the ink will dry on the heads of perfectly good cartridges, causing the problem you cite.

Use alchohol based cleaner with the kind pads supplied with a new cartridge to regularly clean the heads of your ink cartridges, according to instructions in your manual and CAREFULLY, so as to not damage the heads.
