Question about Lexmark E321 Laser Printer

Printer will not print

I have just conected a Lexmark E321 printer to a HP laptop. The printer had been hooked up to another computer that died. I loaded the software and everything seems fine extept the printer will not print. Quick books sents informtion to the printer, trying to print invoices but nothing happens. I ran the troubleshooting procedure 3 times and still nothing. I even changed cables. The printer worked fine before and each time it is tested I prints the test sheet. I did change out the old clip type cable for a USB cable and I assume that is part of the problem. I am not sure if the port for the USB cable should be "LPT or COM", but I have tried both and that doen't seem to matter. The computer shows the cable is attached to LPT 1 under "printer properties" Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have unpluged, turned off, and changed cables several times already and just tried it again. This does not help.

Please read what My original question. I have installed the software three times and gone completely through the troubleshooting procedures 3 times or more. The software and the printes both seem to be working correctly. There are now 31 items in the queued to print but the information is not getting to the printer.

    What is the "reset" method?

  • david404 Jan 06, 2009

USB is not listed under ports. The computer has 4 USB ports, but do not show up as an option. How do I add them?

  • david404 Jan 06, 2009

I went back to using the old LPT cable

Stop the Print spooler by going to the command prompt (Click Start > Run > type: “cmd” without the quotes) and typed “NET STOP SPOOLER”
Then go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files

then restart the print spooler by typing “NET START SPOOLER” at the command

You can usually delete the files that are in the queue by right clicking on the icon in the bottom right of the screen. This will clear your print spooler.

When installing the printer some usb models require you to start the software installation before you plug in the printer. Keep this in mind. I understand you installed the software multiple times but follow the steps below and it should work.

1.) remove all printer software by using add remove programs or going directly to the program folder and selecting uninstall

2.) Make sure the printer is unplugged and start the software installation make sure when it asks what port you want that you select you pick the one with usb in the title. It will be something like virtual printer port 0001. I have included a picture.

Hi there , you need to change the Parallel type cable for a USB cable, that is not part of the problem, now do the following:

Unplug printer USB.

Reinstall software with printer USB unplugged.

When asked by software setup wizard, select the printer that you are installing as USB connection printer, not parallel.

When asked by software setup wizard, select the printer that you are installing as Default Printer.

Connect USB only when asked by setup program.

The above should fix the problem.

If your new laptop is running Vista, and the dead PC was running XP, you will need to downlaod USB Vista drivers for your product.

http://downloads.lexmark.com/perl/downloads/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:0:0:0

this is where you can enter your printer model # and O/S to find the proper driver.
If you need help removing the printer let me know.

Unplug USB cable to printer.
Delete the printer from system manager.
Reboot
Install driver from Lexmark site for your O/S
Shut down
plug in usb and power on printer
Start computer
let it do its thing

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if you are using the first image below, then it would have to be LPT1, if the second, then it would have to be USB.
Printer will not print - 45fb162.jpg
4175752.jpg

If the printer still does not work, re-hook using the parallel/LPT1. Reboot the computer, enter your CMOS/BIOS. On one of the entry/feature would be for LPT1. There would be several choices, among them ECC, EPP, STD. Try one at a time until Lexmark E321 printer works on the parallel/LPT1. Of course, on the CMOS/BIOS, Save before Exit.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi David,

Things to double check:

Open up Printer Properties.
Click the Ports Tab
Make sure the correct port is checked.

Then bring up the print queue
Click Printer
Make sure it's set as default

Question:
When you send a print job from Quickbooks, does the job show in the correct Print Queue?

Comment me back please.
Mike

    David,

With a USB connection, LPT or COM ports won't work. Scroll down on the Ports Tab. There should be a USB port down there somewhere. Choose it.

    Another question:
When you pull the USB cord, then put it back in, does the computer recognize a newly attached device?

    Mike

Empty out the print queue. The first job can block the rest. When they are all deleted make sure the Printer Paused is unchecked.

Print another test to ensure a clear queue.
Then try a Quick Books Job

    David,

In control Panel, Click Add Hardware.
Let it search on its own.
It should find USB Ports and ask if you want to install.
    Accept.

Then try the all the previous suggestions again.

Make sure to install all drivers and software before connecting printer.

Restart PC and then connect printer.

This should work in that order.

Thanks.

    might be the USB ports are not connected inside the cpu;
so you need to connect the usb wires inside( plug the USB ports to work).

How to open printer cover to remove paper jam on Lexmark E321

Hi,
Remove the jammed paper. Unplug the printer from the mains and PC. Inspect the rollers, etc for tiny paper piece(s) that may be stuck, or other debris. Try to clean rollers and make sure they are dry.
Keep printer unplugged for about 2 minutes and replug and try a test print.
Also make sure that you have waited long enough for the printer to heat up before giving a print job.
Finally, it could be an issue with the paper sensor. If this is the case, you will probably have to take the printer in for servicing..

Hope that helps!

I relplaced the toner cartridge in my Lexmark E321. It was working fine and all of a sudden it quit printing on the paper. What should I do?

Lexmark does not support the use of refilled cartridges or third party cartridges in their products.

Lexmark considers this to be product tampering and will void the printer's remaining warranty.

Please try a Lexmark factory new cartridge. If you have a factory new cartridge, then you need to call Lexmark and let them know that you were sold a defective cartridge.

Problem with printer all buttons flashing

All lights flashing is an error indication. to learn the problem you'll need a service manaual. The procedure is to hit the Continue button twice - see which lights flash (secondary code) and consult the manual. Then repeat that step and look up the final code (tertiary code) in the manual. This should be the problem.
