Fan turning on and off , not sure about compressor

The fan turns on and off repeatedly and I can hear a click which I assume is the compressor trying to kick in. This pattern is almost continuos bit ocassionally I will hear the compressor actually start and go through a normal cycle. It seems to be cooling fine .

Its the compressor relay thats clicking[its a little unit connected to compressor with at least two wires]it could be that its [relay]going bad or the compressor could be failing, but it dose cool once it gets started so thats a good sign.the relay has two parts.one an over load, thats like a curcit breaker,it cuts power to compressor if its drawing to much amparage.the other part is a swith that goes fro start winding to run winding.as a repairman i would pull relay and use volt meter to check winds before replacing relay.its been alittle while but depending on age of refer, start winding around 2.7+-.5run winding 1.1 +- .5 new box use less energy so lower resistance older higher.hope that gives you a start ps fan goes off on because its starts with compressor.God bless ,tom

U MAY HAVE BLOWN THE COMPRESSOR RELAY DUE TO THE TRIP? U CAN REMOVE IT FROM THE COMPRESSOR AND SHAKE IT IF U DONT HAVE A METER TO TEST IT, IF IT RATTLES THEN ITS BAD? IF THERE IS A CLICKING WHEN COMPRESSOR IS TRYING TO RUN ITS BAD, OTHER WISE I WOULD SUSPECT A BAD COLD CONTROL THERMOSTAT ESPECIALLY IF UR TURNING IT FROM UNDERNEATH AND NOT JUST THE KNOB? DID U USE A SCREWDRIVER TO GET INTO THE TINY SLOT UNDER THE TIMER AND TURN IT SLOWLY TILL U HEAR A CLICK? TURN AGIN AND THE NEXT CLICK SHOULD TURN IT BACK ON U SHOULD HEAR THE COMPRESSOR AND THE FAN WORJKING

Fridge question

Sounds like you mad have a bad relay or overload on the compressor. I would also check your condenser fan motor to make sure its running and blowing air on the compressor to cool it. If its not running the compressor may be overheating and shutting off on its overload. If the condenser fan motor is running I would assume that you would need a new relay and overload it will come in a kit. Usually it will make a clicking sound when the compressor is TRYING to start and then shuts off on its overload if the start components are bad.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Can hear motor working turned up fully stillnot

Be sure what you hear is not the fan instead of the compressor. Unplug the unit, wait 10 minutes, and plug it back in. Listen for the compressor to start up, or even listen for a faint "hum and click" sound. That would be the compressor trying to start.

I can hear the motor running and the lights are on. But the refrigerator is warm and the freezer has thawed everything.

By motor, I assume you are referring to the compressor underneath the refrigerator. Close by the compressor toward the rear of the refrigerator, there should be a compressor fan. This should be turning. If it's not, the refrigerant coils will not be cooled adequately. This results in inadequate cooling inside the unit. Check also to make sure the coils are not covered with dirt and grime. If they are, clean them.

If the compressor fan is not turning, you will need to replace the fan motor.

Freezer is not staying cold. The freezer is on but its not staying cold enough to keep the food frozen. The Ice maker switch is turned on but ice is still melting. Turned the control to coldest but still...

Sounds like the evap. fan motor is not turning. What is the freezer temp. have you measured it ? What about the fresh food section, (fridge compartment).

Anyway, try this. Hold the door switch in the closed position with the freezer door ajar and see/listen for the fan coming on. If you can't be sure, the best way to do this is to first turn the thermostat all the way to the "off" postion, and with the freezer door ajar and holding the door sw. closed (pushed in). turn the thermostat back on. (you may need to turn off then back on first if your arms aren't long enough) You should hear the fan motor start.

NOTE; you may hear the compressor overload "click" off if trying to start it right after shutting down, this is normal (under short cycles or manual restarts). You may also hear the condensor fan motor run (under the fridge by compressor) this too is normal. try to indentify the freezer fan (evaporater fan motor) running or not.

good luck.

ED5SHEXKQ01 is 7 years old. Stopped cooling. Fan is running.

It could be your compressor trying to kick in. Or it could be your defrost system trying to start or stop. The least expensive thing to start is to replace the start kit on the compressor. Call or email us and we'll be sure to get the right part to you asap. You need to turn it off NOW before you burn the other parts up and don't turn it back on until you install new parts.

I have a 10 yr old Maytag side-by-side. Came home the other night and the Freezer was at 40F. What is the most likely problem

to start: make sure refrig is turned on and running.
1.do you hear the fan blowing inside the frzr compartment?
2.pull refrig out and listen for compressor running. is compressor running/humming away or are you hearing a humming sound followed by a clicking sound?if you hearing a clicking sound than mostly
is your relay on the compressor that went out. look for a smal device on the side of compressor w/two or three wires. part# 12002794 $32.00

also make sure there's no frost build on frzr rear wall.that's another problem

Whirlpool refrigerator (top mount freezer) model ET8FTKXKQ00

I feel sure you will find the compressor start relay is probably bad unless it is a Frigidaire manufactured refrigerator. If it is a Frigidaire then if may very well be a bad compressor.
I hope I have helped, supertechks
