percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.

I know this is going to be hard to believe but you have either dirty / loose or coroded cabels if you jump it from the car and it strarts then the only thing you are doing is appling power to the outside of the battery connection the inside is not making contact with the battery post clean with a wire brush do both poles apply a no corode paste tighten bolts snug they're made of lead and bend easily so don't over do it Good Luck Bruce depending on where you live you may want to greese up the snowblower too :-)

Testimonial: "That was it! I cleaned up the neg cable. Put it back on; it started right up. I do use it for snow removal (NH) and that is coming soon. Thanks!"
If smoke is coming from solenoid on rear top side of trans then internal windings are bad but usually it will blow the fuse.Remove plastic nut from solenoid, slide solenoid off shaft then engage PTO.If solenoid does not smoke slide screwdriver or something like it into solenoid and see if there is any Magnetic force. If smoke comes from deck check idlers and spindles for movement.Be sure to ckeck gearcase oil level on the deck.
