Question about Dewalt Heavy - Duty 31° Clipped Head Framing Nailer - D51822
Dewalt nailers have some vinyl orings that fail. Usually found within the trigger valve, headvalve, and between the cylinder and cylinder spacer (white plastic piece). A dewalt nailer with failing orings may not leak air however. The vinyl orings tend to start to crumble and the tacky-crumbling pieces tend to create a seal. Easy way to check condition of the vinyl seals in a Dewalt is to remove the trigger valve and look at the orings on the firing pin/stem (2mmx1.5mm orings). If these two orings are soft and sticky, then orings inside of gun most likely the same. Check band on the outside of the cylinder (part # 390159-00) is what causes piston to return to top. But also check to too tight or too loose piston oring, bent shaft of driver and worn/ broken lower bumper. If all is well with internal parts and piston does not return to top, too much air is leaking past nose of gun. Oring kit sold by dewalt will contain most of the orings needed. The kit may not have orings for the trigger. You will at need two orings (2mm x 1.5mm) for the trigger valve stem or just replace the valve. Use white grease or silicone paste lube on all the orings. Hi Bud, This is a common problem as they get older. The mechanisms get a little worn and they pick up a lot of debris, especially the stick nailers. I have had an old bostitch for over 20 years and instead of rebuilding it all the time, I have taken to cleaning it regularly and taking it apart once in a while and wiping it with steel wool to check for any burrs and tiny pieces of the stick wire. The best results I have found are to wash it down with an engine degreaser and blow it out throughly with compressed air and then relube with pnuematic tool oil, especially the piston. Also be sure to put a few drops in the air inlet each time you connect it so it lubes the piston from the inside. Take out any nails and fire it several times onto a piece of wood to make sure the lube reaches everywhere. If you get a little too much inside it will spit it out as you nail but for framing that is not a big deal and I would rather have a little more than not enough. Good Luck, this should Fixya!

I worked at at tool rental center while attending college and learned from the old tool masters about nails and nailers. Rental stores have many different brands of nailers to rent and customers would bring their own nails of all brands. You will notice on the case/box that your nails will /should work on many other brands however the degree or angle of the nails is not always exacly as stated on the box. You should check with protractor the exact angle of your nails and also check the exact angle of the nailer. Use straight edge on travel path of the piston and another on guide rails to check angle of the gun. You will discover that all is not as stated as in a perfect world. If the angle is off slightly, the head of the second nail will get into the path of the driver. This happens mostly with clip head because the nail heads are so close together. The full round head is spaced further apart with less jamming. If angle is off slightly, take a look at other brands of nails with protractor in hand, the angle will be different slightly or choose a slightly thicker nail. Look for the nails to fit with bottom of nail hitting the barrel first. This will move the head of the nail slightly away from the center line. Finally do not release pusher with force as this will jamb nails closer together. Good Luck!?

There are 4 orings that cause this problem. Two are in the trigger valve installed on the firing pin. The firing pin can be seen just under the trigger, however if you replaced the valve, you could assume no problems with the trigger valve. I would take apart the old trigger valve and examine the orings on the pin. The pin should fit snugly in the trigger valve cap and also in the valve. If the orings look good and it does fit snugly, most likely valve is still good. The other two orings to suspect are installed on the cylinder inside the nailer and make contact with the bulkhead (white plastic piece that seals the cylinder note parts reference 55, 74, 11 on the parts list). Most likely there is a problem with swollen orings between the cylinder and cylinder spacer (white plastic piece between cylinder and body ). Order the oring kit because nost likely when you take the gun apart the orings will fall apart. Dewalt used vinyl orings instead of viton on critical areas of the cylinder and these vinyl orings failed.
