I have a Dell inspiron 5100. When I try to turn it on, it just stays blank. It shows the Dell and Windows logos, but the screen where I'm supposed to choose my user account doesn't appear.

Are there any error messages displayed? Does the laptop switch off, or does it still remain on? (are lights etc. on?). Also, have you connected to an external monitor recently? I suggest attempting to connect to a monitor or TV using the S-Video or VGA connectors on your laptop, this should get the login screen to show up.

Boots up but then goes blank when it is suppose to go to login screen

Can you boot into safe mode? Press F5 or F8 key before Windows Splash Screen.
Do you have an external monitor you can connect to the laptop?
These steps will help to determine what is causing the problem.

Laptop screen blank at start up

If it still doesn't work when you hook it up to an external monitor, assuming you did that properly, then it is your motherboard/video card.

If you have a seperate video card, I would replace that first. If you don't have a seperate video card, then you need a new motherboard.

FIRST - I would try hooking it back up to an external monitor, and making sure you switch it over to use the external as the default. otherwise you wont get picture.

Sorry... good luck.

Dell laptop monitor is blank. When the computer boots I see an image for a split second, then it goes black with a faint ghost image that eventually fades.

hello there,

please ensure it that the graphics adaptor is working properly by combinig laptop and an external monitor.
If you still face the same problem, then the graphic adaptor maybe malfunctioning and has to be replaced..

The internal intel 900 GMA Chip can be replaced and purchased seperately, but unless you do have some experience in exchanging notebook parts or are willing to cope with such issues I would leave it to a technician to do the replacement.

Good luck

Monitor goes blank

Try restarting the computer in Safe Mode and then check. In case it flickers in Safe Mode too, then the LCD screen might be damaged and you might need to replace it.

Laptop monitor goes black

If you're working on the computer when that happens, it's not probably a power setting. Try to update your BIOS to the most current version at the toshiba support website (support.toshiba.com) & see what happens. Fixes the issue most of the time

I hope this helps.
