1) 2x + 5y = 7
2) 3x + 6y = 3

I'm going to use the method of elimination to solve for x and y.
Multiply 1) by 3 and 2) by 2 to allow the x's to be eliminated.

1) 6x + 15y = 21
2) 6x + 12y = 6

Now subtract line 2 from line 1.

0x + 3y = 15
---- ----
3 3 divide both sides by 3 to get y by itself.
y =5.
Substitute into 1) to calculate x.
2x + 5(5) = 7
2x + 25 = 7
2x + 25 -25 = 7 - 25
2x = -18
---- ----- divide both sides by 2 to get x by itself
2 2

x = -9

Check by plugging in answer into the other equation, in this case 2)

3 (-9) + 6(5) = 3
-27 + 30 = 3
3 = 3

How to calculate cubic feet?


Multiply 21 inches by 14 inches by 10 inches to get 2940 cubic inches. There are 12 inches in a foot, so there are 12^3=1728 cubic inches in a cubic foot. Divide 2940 cubic inches by 1728 cubic inches per cubic foot to get about 1.7 cubic feet.

Alternatively, first convert all measurements to feet. 21 inches is 1 3/4 feet, 14 inches is 1 1/6 feet, 10 inches is 5/6 feet. Multiply them together to get 245/144 cubic feet, which again is about 1.7 cubic feet.

It's always nice when doing a problem two different ways gives the same answer.

Start by using the distributive property to expand the term 5(I-31)=5*I-5*31=5*I-155.
Rewrite the equation as 5*I+5*I-155=55
Combine the terms with I, this yields 10*I-155=55
Add 155 to both sides of the equation 10*I-155+155=55+155
you now get 10*I=210
Divide both sides of the equation by 10
(10*I)/10=210/10
Cancel the 10's on the left and divide 210 by 10 to get 21
Thus I=21

Basically you use the priority order of operations BEDMAS backwards

Here are the solution steps:

10x minus 3x equals 20 plus 1

10X minus 3X is 7X (right?)
20 plus 1 is 21 (right?)
therefore:

7X = 21

now divide both sides of the equals sign by 7

7X divided by 7 equals 21 divided by 7

7X / 7 = 21/7

X = 3 (answer)

It would seem to me that the answer was found at a grade 3 or 4 level

If you divide 288 by 4 you get 97. Then the 1 is carried to the 2 leaving 12. 12 divided be 4 is 3 leaving a result of 397.

Second one....

217 divided by 5 is 43.4 or 43 with a remainder of 2.

Leaving 5 divided by 5 equaling 1.

Combining the 1 with the 43 with a remainder of 2 bringing you a total of 143 r2

This as mentioned would be at a grade 3 or 4 calculation with no understanding of how to properly divide.
