This sounds like a typical symptom of a broken motor coupling. Click on the following link for step-by-step instructions on how to replace one:
These instructions will give you the necessary information to take the washer apart to get to the motor coupling to see if it has failed. A tell tale sign is black rubber dust particles under the washer where the drive motor is located. Usually the rubber bushing shears apart, or the plastic tines break off the coupling itself. If the motor coupling is broken a replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the coupling can be found under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump" heading on the next page as item number 13. The part number is 285753A. This is a very simple repair job. If need further assistance, or have any questions please let me know. For quicker responses to your questions, please go to my profile and use the "Ask Me" feature. Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems:

the first thing you should check would be that you had pressed the motor coupling far enough onto the motor shaft and the the shaft on the gear case the shafts should be flush with the coupling if not this will cause a bind on the motor and also cause it to have a hard time starting
