Eureka 4870 vacuum brushroll control doesn't work

I cannot get the brushroll control on our Eureka 4870 vacuum to work. It doesn't stop the brush roll from turning.

Mine will not shut off automatically when put in the upright position. I called Eureka, but they only offered to give me a service location. I am not going to pay someone $100 to fix a vacuum I paid about 125 for. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. It worked fine for the first year or so but has not since, even after replacing the belt. I'm stumped.

You really have to push hard on that switch for it to engage; both thumbs; I'm 190 pounds and I still had to apply a lot of extra pressure; poor design for a great vacuum cleaner

Have a Eureka "the boss" smartvac, won't pick up anything when I try to vacuum carpet. Any suggestions on how to fic this problem?

1st) make sure your yellow dial at the top by handle is in floor position
2nd) make sure your brush roll spins when handle is reclined in operating position. (disengage brushroll control by flipping the "switch" towards you)
3rd) check belt to make sure it is not broken
4th) check the brush roll for debris caught in it
5th) check lower hose

Brush roll belt stops turning when in position to vacuum. Does turn when vacuum is turned onto side. Belt is in tact, brush roll is fine. What's going on?

I think I know what the problem is with your machine. It's a rather lengthy repair, and I'll be happy to photograph it for you (like I do on most of my Fixya answers), but I'd like to know before doing all of that if you still need help, or if you've already fixed it.

Thanks,

CJ

I have a Eureka 5902AVZ and the brushroll does not work. when i remove the belt, which is not torn nor worn out, the motor spins perfectly fine. Though when i put the brushroll back into place, it shows...

Hi and welcome to Fixya. I am Kelly.

You have correctly identified the problem as the brush roll itself.

There is a bearing under each end cap of the brush roll. You can gain access to the bearings usually by gripping the browah roll end caps and rotate the caps in opposing but loosening (ccw rt / cw left) directions.

Many times I have found that there is just a mass of hair under the end cap that functions like a brake. Clean it up really well on under BOTH end caps.

Do a spin test by putting the end caps back on (Hold it horizontal) and rotating the brush roll with your thumbs. It should spin freely.

If it feels like there is still friction then your probably going to have to take the brush roll with you down to the nearest vacuum cleaner repair / supply shop and get 2 new bearings. Most shops will install the NEW bearings for you if you have the brush roll in hand. It is a much cheaper fix than the brush roll itself.

(buy a new belt too!)

Take care

Kelly

New brushroll for eureka smartvac 4870; bristles too long to turn

HI Don't forget that you have a height adjustment control so its better to put it in the highest position - if this is not allowing the roller brush to move properly on the carpet then switch the vacuum off, and lightly trim with scissors on the brush lines. Avoid cutting everything down though - a slight trim should improve things. Generally though when brushes appear too long its usually because the height adjustment dial hasn't been set upwards.

Brushroll engagement at carpet mode doesn't always work eureka 4870

Is the brushroll ends turning freely? if not then replace it, There could be a problem with the belt, or with the idler clamp asm. Sometimes they get clogged up with debris and won't work properly, try cleaning it. This is what lets the brush turn or not turn, depending on the position of the switch.
