The Dell toner cartridge contains toner, the corona wire, the drum assembly and the developing roller. Another words its pretty much self contained and nothing fragile around it. Obviously I'm not suggesting hammer and a chisel but you can pull to your content. However, unplug the printer as the fuser which melts the toner to the paper is still in the printer and it heats up to 140C to 230C so don't stick hand inside too far. Fuser is located behind the cartridge. Good luck and if this helps please submit your vote.
The original answer is totally wrong for this printer. This printer uses a "carousel" of toner cartridges. Each color is "presented" to the drum/transfer belt one at a time, controlled by the printer controller board. While there is a way to release the latch that prevents the carousel from turning, it's best to let the printer do that, by itself. In the Menu (on the pronter, press the Menu button), step through the options until you reach replace toner. Then you can select which color you wish to remove/replace - one at a time. This method keeps the registration accurate for the carousel rotation, and lines everything up properly for removal and replacement. The right-hand side of the toner cartridge should be pulled first, slightly ahead of the left-hand side. This properly releases the snap-in "catch" that is used on the left side. Note: While it is possible to remove the cartridges by hand (manual over-ride), it can lead to breaking parts of the toner cartridge, or possibly the printer itself. The lower front door has a plastic 'finger' on the left side that protrudes into a shrouded opening where the mechanical carousel release is located. When operated properly, it requires VERY little pressure, which is to be applied upward, not inward. The drum carousel will then be free to be manually rotated.
