Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

We are considering purchasing a used Sony Rear Projection tv model #KP57HW40. We have a question about adjusting the color - the colors are not coming together, so that there is a double image - even writing is hard to read. Is this something that is easy to adjust?

Hello,

In short, the answer to your question is no. The convergence problem in this set is not really too easy to repair...sort of. Most of the time, most convergence failures are due to the PINCUSHION circuit, and it can be a ****** to track down. Most often, the easiest way to repair it is to send the entire D board to Sony for refurbishment, at about 100-200 dollars (not including labor to remove it or replace it), and this is assuming that the power supply is giving all the voltages necessary.

More than that, though, is the condition of the CRT tubes themselves. A whole lot of these set have tubes that do not last too long, as they suffer phosphor damage from arcs in the tube. The tubes are not available from Sony for replacement. Average lifespan to date: 6 years. The picture may still look good, but...

Knowing up front is a good thing. Hope this helps you...

Kp57hw40 is a greenish color

If green appears to bleed out of objects then it's probably the saturation level is to high. If that doesn't work you can try changing the Hue setting more towards red and away from green.
If neither works and you don't have a warranty I would call your a local TV repair company.

I have a kp57hw40 sony tv and the scren it flashs

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Please adjust TINT control of Video Settings in Menu that will adjust color tone of TV. I do not think this problem is related with Lamp because TV screen does not have any color blobs or spots.
Above solution is for Sony KDF-55WF655 model TV, if your model number is different, let me know.
Thanks.
