The best tool to do it is watchmakers knife, but any proper knife with hardened steel blade can do the job. Make sure the blade is NOT flexible.
Check carefully the sides of your watch and you will notice the groove. Place knife blade into that groove and press it in. At the same time try to make a scooping turn to lift the caseback. Usually there must be underlayed caseback as well and it opens exactly in the same manner.
Make sure you do all this carefully and do not let the blade to slip or your watch will end up with nasty scratches or even damaged movement.
That job isn't a big deal, but requires some skill, so, BE CAREFULL.
Don't forget to rate, please.

I have a Elgin Pocket Watch that i cannot open to get to the movement and serial number. The company "logo" is in Cursive Elgin Natl. Watch Co. and the winding stem is in the 3 oclock position....

The back is probably a screw on back like the front bezel. If it doesn't come off easily take it to a watchmaker rather than doing damage. Try placing the watch in the palm of your hand and place the other palm on top of the watch. Like a sandwich. Now try twisting the back loose. Lefty loosey.. righty tighty! If you get it open be very careful. Remember the watchmaker's motto. DO NO DAMAGE!
Good luck

I need to open the back of an Elgin pocket watch to find the production number, there is no obvious way to access it. It is a very old watch

The back screws off counter clock wise.

If you will post the ser number off the movement we can tell you almost all production information about this watch.

Hope this tip helps.

Need a new crystal for Elgin 19703647

You do not need to go all over the world to find replacement for your watch glass. You have plenty of excellent watchmakers in France. I've been there, so, I know. All you have to do is to find your nearest watch repair shop and bring your watch in. Watchmaker will get all the measurements and will replace the glass.

I have an Elgin HC and an unable to open the works to get the serial number to obtain more information. I can open two sides and all they say are 8809358. ???

Listen do not try to open this yourself take it to a jerwerly this is a very valuable Watch and you do not want to do anything to damage it whats so ever I Ruined a watch like that and if I had just lefted it alone and took it to someone who knew what to do I would still have it in one piece! Go to E-Bay Look under Antiques and collectables should be under coins and watches you can also Look up how valuable they are!
There is a liquid you can use to help restore the numbers on it I saw it the other day Looking up a 1884 Sliver Dollar. As soon as I can I will Look it up and see what I can Find out about it For you.
