The other is to use a 3rd party software. I suspect this is what you mean. There are a few free apps like Recuva, but the ones you purchase like Stellar or Wondershare have better navigations.
They take a good amount of time to do a deep scan and almost as long to sort and find your files. Plus this should be done ASAP, before the computer overwrites disc area. You also need to restore onto another drive. Again, for over writing purposes.
