SOURCE: Carrier furnace, pilot does not light, fans run

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Carrier Weathermaker 9200 Gas Furnace Error Code 31

A month or so ago, I woke up to discover that I had no heat in my house. I went to the furnace to do a diagnostic check, removed the service door and quickly discovered that there was no flame (visible through the glass peep-hole).

I followed the manufacturer's shut-off procedure, which can be found in the manual, here: http://legalectric.org/f/2011/03/carrier-9200-weathermaker-uhe-om58-67.pdf. When I turned the furnace back on, I saw that the igniter did not glow (should be visible through the same peep-hole - should look like a red-hot, 2-prong tuning fork) and that the red LED error code indicator (visible through the lower peep-hole) was blinking 3 short flashes and 1 long flash (error code 31).

Now what I SHOULD HAVE done was check the pressure switch first (see service manual pg. 3, component #16). By removing the rubber lines that connect tot the pressure switch, one end at a time and both at the pressure switch and the bottom of the igniter box, you may notice some debris in the lines or the male adapters on the pressure switch or igniter box. If you do, clear out the debris with a paper clip (don't insert the paper clip into the body of the pressure switch, though). After checking all connections for debris, disconnect the hose that connects to the top of the pressure switch at the "T" between the pressure switch and the igniter box and blow/suck air in and out of the pressure switch (lightly). If you hear a small click when you pass air in and out, that's the pressure switch functioning. If you hear crackling or you can't blow in/out easily, you probably have a bad pressure switch.

if you are able to make the pressure switch click, connect all lines and start up the furnace per the mfg recommendations. If the furnace kicks on, it was probably a blockage in the pressure switch lines (likely if you found gunk in the lines or male adaptors on the pressure switch), but it may still be a faulty pressure switch (my problem... when I blew in and out to the pressure switch, I could hear the silicone diaphragm cracking). I got mine going, albeit temporarily, by removing the pressure switch and passing air in and out (blowing pretty hard) with my lips on the bottom hose adapter until I could hear the diaphragm crackle free and it became easier to make it click on and off. That only bought me a few days, though. After that, I bought a replacement pressure switch at a plumbing supply place and replaced the old one. If you found gunk in the lines, I would suggest you have your furnace serviced and let the tech know what you found and where.

If neither procedure fixes the problem, it may be the igniter. For some odd reason, this issue started for me about a month ago and I replaced the igniter (YouTube video instructions are easy to find), which fixed the problem. If even that doesn't work, call a local tech, shut the gas off and wait around in some thick blankets! I hope this helped!

Intertherm furnace model # MMHB-070ABHR-06 red light blinks two times

Number of flashes mean different things for diff models. The meanings of those flashes should be posted somewhere on the unit; usually inside front of the bottom service panel. Though you can't truly diagnose a problem by number of flashes they can give you an idea of where to look for a problem. There are a ton of videos and how-to's about furnaces on youtube by real service techs. Most modern furnaces have basically the same set-up and features so don't worry about your paticular brand; but of course that would be the best place to start looking. You could start here to familiarize yourself with your brand of furnace:

And then here:

Hope this helps.

I have a carrier furnace and a error led code is one long then an immediate short folliowed by another short before the long

Lucky for Light Emitting Diodes huh? (led)

I'm looking at a legend, on a Carrier furnace door, right now.

One long followed by two short is the "twenty one" code.

Here's what the door sticker says;

"EACH OF THE FOLLOWING CODES IS A TWO DIGIT NUMBER WITH THE FIRST DIGIT DETERMINED BY THE NUMBER OF SHORT FLASHES AND THE SECOND DIGIT DETERMINED BY THE NUMBER OF LONG FLASHES."

Look on your legend, inside the door of the furnace, to find the code diagnostic recommendation.

Make sure to read the codes several times and see the code from the beginning so you make sure the code starts with that digit.

Knowing this furnace means; the code diagnostic recommendation is just that, a suggestion. It will not tell a trained tech what to fix, only a starting point and tell-tale signs.

Code 21 is the gas valve lockout, and will not reset. May be a gas valve, relay or control board (most likely). Call someone.

It's complex for a trained person too, so if you're not familiar, this isn't something to make a mistake on.

Luck to you. Let me know how you get on.

Carrier Gas Furnace runs fine randomly stops blowing LEDs flash

That blinking light may be the diagnostic light. Count the blinks next time it fails. Carrier units will have two different blinks depicting the error code such as one blink followed by a pause than 3 blinks giving you an error code of 13. Then look at the wiring diagram, it will have an error code chart telling you where to start with your diagnosis. You already know that if you remove the cover it erases the error code, so look thru the small window first.

Furnace wont run

First of all when you flip the switch, it goes thru a startup sequence. THEN it turns on the Igniter (notice the red glow). Then the gas turns on.

Now at this point check the idiot light and it should be giving you a code of 34. That 34 (3 shorts 4 longs) says that there was a problem igniting the furnace. After it cycles thru at least 4 times and fails to ignite all the blowers, then is when you get a code 14 (1 short 3 longs)

NOTICE what's happening with ALL the burner Tubes each time it attempts to ignite. If only one or two are running....then this is your problem.
To fix all you do is take out the burner Tubes, look for debris, blow them out (blow from the front where all the jets are), and replace them in sequence from left to right (the tabs overlap).

Reset the error by disconnecting your power supply for 10sec. and operate the unit. If it wont work check for defective thermistor.
