You have Intellivent gas control thermostat.
Copy following link for troubleshoot resources:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

This type of gas control valve can be reset, and does not need to be replaced, but cause of overheated combustion chamber must be addressed.
Main cause is dirty combustion parts, and-or air intake screen clogged with dust. Solution depends on brand of water heater.

Led status 3 trouble shooting advice

More information is needed.
Water heater is not identified.
Add a comment with more information from label on side of tank.

If you have gas water heater, then open following links to identify gas valve, and download error code diagnostic and possible service manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html#intelli
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html#troubleshoot

For power vent water heater with Honeywell gas valve: three flashes indicate pressure switch or blower temperature switch not working.
Typical causes appear on page 13 on manual: can be bad blower, bad switch, blocked vent, exhaust temperature too high.

I have a AO Smith GPS 75 200. The power is on, however the temp control does not light up and nothing is working. Is the White Roger thermostat gas valve shot, is there some test I could do to make sure...

You have AO Smith tank-type power vent water heater with FVIR flame arrestor.
1) I believe this system has White Rodgers intellivent gas valve, with led indicator lights.
To test if valve is operational:
-NORMAL operating mode displays no lights on gas valve.
-Unplug unit from electrical outlet and plug back in. All lights on gas control should display for 1-5 seconds.
-Press BOTH Hotter and Colder temperature buttons for one second to 'wake up' the control, and release buttons and LED will display temperature.
-Press Hotter or Colder and see if any indicator light shows on gas valve.
This will give baseline if gas valve is functioning.
-Intellivent gas valve requires outlet that is wired 100% correctly. Test outlet with circuit analyzer.
-Water heater must be properly grounded for intellivent to operate.

2) Open following link to identify gas valve and download possible service manual with error codes and testing procedure. Service manual is a large file and will probably not load on dial-up.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html#intelli

3) Open following link for AO Smith manuals and service handbooks.
Shows same intellivent service manual, and shows manuals for power vent, but does not specifically list the GPS75 series

I have an A. O. Smith Model FPSH 40-261 hot water heater. It won't heat water. there is a green light on the control flashing. What does it mean?

AO Smith uses the Honeywell ICON gas valve with green indicator light.
Some models use White Rodgers Intellivent with a row of indicator lights.

The gas control blinks the error code:
Open following links to identify gas control thermostat and read possible error codes:

What are the carrier 8000ts led error codes?

They are listed inside the front panel of the main unit.

LED CODE

EACH OF THE FOLLOWING STATUS CODES IS A TWO DIGIT NUMBER WITH THE FIRST

DIGIT DETERMINED BY THE NUMBER OF SHORT FLASHES AND THE SECOND DIGIT BY

THE NUMBER OF LONG FLASHES.

STATUS

11 NO PREVIOUS CODE - Stored status code is erased automatically after 72

hours. On RED LED boards stored status codes can also be erased when power

(115 VAC or 24 VAC) to control is interrupted.

12 BLOWER ON AFTER POWER UP (115 VAC or 24 VAC) -Blower runs for 90

seconds, if unit is powered up during a call for heat (R-W closed) or R-W opens

during blower on-delay.

13 LIMIT CIRCUIT LOCKOUT - Lockout occurs if the limit or flame rollout switch is

open longer than 3 minutes.

- Control will auto reset after three hours. - Refer to #33.

14 IGNITION LOCKOUT - Control will auto-reset after three hours. Refer to #34.

21 GAS HEATING LOCKOUT - Control will NOT auto reset.

Check for: - Mis-wired gas valve -Defective control (valve relay)

22 ABNORMAL FLAME-PROVING SIGNAL - Flame is proved while gas valve is

de-energized. Inducer will run until fault is cleared. Check for:

- Leaky gas valve - Stuck-open gas valve

23 PRESSURE SWITCH DID NOT OPEN Check for:

- Obstructed pressure tubing. - Pressure switch stuck closed.

24 SECONDARY VOLTAGE FUSE IS OPEN Check for:

- Short circuit in secondary voltage (24VAC) wiring.

31 PRESSURE SWITCH DID NOT CLOSE OR REOPENED - If open longer than

five minutes, inducer shuts off for 15 minutes before retry. Check for:

- Excessive wind - Proper vent sizing - Defective inducer motor

- Low inducer voltage (115VAC) - Defective pressure switch

- Inadequate combustion air supply - Restricted vent

- Disconnected or obstructed pressure tubing

- Low inlet gas pressure (if LGPS used)

If it opens during blower on-delay period, blower will come on for the selected

blower off-delay.

33 LIMIT CIRCUIT FAULT - Indicates a limit, or flame rollout is open. Blower will

run for 4 minutes or until open switch remakes whichever is longer. If open

longer than 3 minutes, code changes to lockout #13. If open less than 3 minutes

status code #33 continues to flash until blower shuts off. Flame rollout switch

requires manual reset. Check for: - Restricted vent

- Proper vent sizing - Loose blower wheel - Excessive wind

- Dirty filter or restricted duct system.

- Defective blower motor or capacitor. - Defective switch or connections.

- Inadequate combustion air supply (Flame Roll-out Switch open).

34 IGNITION PROVING FAILURE - Control will try three more times before lockout

#14 occurs. If flame signal lost during blower on-delay period, blower will come

on for the selected blower off-delay. Check for: - Control ground continuity

- Flame sensor must not be grounded

- Oxide buildup on flame sensor (clean with fine steel wool).

- Proper flame sense microamps (.5 microamps D.C. min., 4.0 - 6.0 nominal).

- Gas valve defective or gas valve turned off - Manual valve shut-off

- Defective Hot Surface Ignitor

- Low inlet gas pressure

- Inadequate flame carryover or rough ignition

- Green/Yellow wire MUST be connected to furnace sheet metal

45 CONTROL CIRCUITRY LOCKOUT Auto-reset after one hour lockout due to;

- Gas valve relay stuck open - Flame sense circuit failure

- Software check error

Reset power to clear lockout. Replace control if status code repeats.

If status code recall is needed, briefly remove then reconnect one main limit wire to display

stored status code. On RED LED boards do not remove power or blower door before initiating

status code recall. After one status code recall is completed component test will occur.

My rheem cri II furnace will not work unless I turn the gas valve knob from on to off and back. The green led light is blinking then solid when I reset knob. Any ideas?

The green light is flashing an error code. When you turn the knob off and back on you are resetting the safety. Look for the number of blinks in a row. Then find the legend for codes on gas valve or on furnace. When is the last time you changed the air filter? A dirty filter can cause this problem.

I see the flame and hear it try to kick on but it cant kick on, it blows cold air

Count the number of flashes on the circuit board after it cycles off. The exhaust blower comes on then the ignitor glows then a click, thats the gas valve opening, then flame. That's where it shuts off after a second. could be the circuit board burned up, check the back to see any dark burnt areas,(this happens alot with this model, they have even started making the board through another company from the original). if so replace they are about $60.00 wholesale. This will cause the led to give all types of faulty codes. If no scorched areas, then refer to the manufacturers info you got with the furnace. The back page will have the codes in relation to the blinking LED- 7 is low gas pressure etc. if its the valve (low gas pressure) use an air compressor with a air gun at low pressure to blow out the gas tube and valve, remove one of the brass gas nozzles and insert the air nozzle blow out the tube and the surrounding cabinet and burners this will usually fix the problem.

Therm calls for heat, enducer fan turns on, pressure switches closes, ignitor sparks, gas valve opens. If ignitor does not spark, it will go to try a few times then lockout. Do you have a led code on your control board, if so what is it blinking? Could be ignitor bad only..
