A little background to get me up tp speed. Is the new HDD you install right out of the box, same type. When you get "Non system disk or disk error" is your Windows XP pro in the DVD/CD drive? Does a "Press any Key to start" come up on the screen?

unplug your laptop, remove battery leave it out for now, pulg into AC push on/off button and repeatedly tap the top row of keys starting with esc, F-1, F-2 ...F12 one after another, we are trying to get ANY response from you laptop. Can you verify the Windows XP PRO is a good disk. we need to get to the Boot Menu and select boot from DVD/CD drive.Bare with me if I am covering ground you have covered. Like a flow chart I start from the beginning , 1) is it plugged in., and so on.

I took the RTC battery out and put it back after one night. What I get now is a black screen with a white blinking cursor in the left top corner. It reads Time date not set. I can get into bios but no help there. The hard drive is ok it reads. It won't take another windows xp disk either. When I touch a key it beeps. It is just blinking that little cursor. I have been searching everywhere for someone who has the same problem but no results yet.

Now , when you say factory settings, do you mean the OS? or the BIOS? Verify that the disk you are loading to load is a known good disk. Remove and test the HDD , Verify and format.

I meant to install xp pro on a new hard drive. The hard drive needs to be formated, and I usually do that with the os cd. But when I put the cd in the drive the pc don't do anything but blink that little curser that looks like a minis sign.

Put the Windows XP pro Installation Disk in the DVD/CD drive. Remove AC plug, remove battery, leave the battery out, plug in the AC, push the on/off button with one finger, IMMEDIATELY start tapping F-10 with another finger REPEATEDLY until you get a response or when you see the white cursor press any key to boot. If you get to the setup page or boot menu choose DVD/CD. If the disk is Good it should start to spin with a light blinking on the DVD/CD drive or HDD.Take a look at this procedure:http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...

I have read these on hp site over and over. I almost got it to boot from a Barts PE cd, but it stopped because of an error. I need to format the raw hard drive and so far, I can;t get any windows os cd to work.

RE BOOT while it starts repeatedly tap F-11. Or go to your Restore and Recovery program in your software.

Set the time in BIOS , have seen the black screen with whie cursor in the top left of the minitor. Some times it says "press any key to continue", When you get to BIOS There should be a "BOOT" tap at the top of the page.BIOS has settings for the DVD/CD , is it enables? The CMOS, button battery inside the laptop Should reset to default settings, if removed for an hour or so.

The bios does not have any way to set the time. I have already enabled cd drive. On this notebook, there are not too many choices in bios. I have to set the time in control panel after windows is running.

At pre boot start tapping esc, F-1, F-2, that should get to the setup page, set time, from there look at the tabs at the top of the page, go to boot , choose boot from DVD/CD. NOW YOU HAVE VERIFIED THE DISK IS GOOD, RIGHT? THE HDD IS GOOD?

SOURCE: Installing windows XP - Error encountered

Can you reboot and get into windows or is now corrupt?

What do you mean by 'uninstalled XP'??

You cant uninstall it unless you format the drive, in which case the recovery discs are now probably useless as they rely on a folder on the HDD called i386.

Recovery discs normally dont have the OS on them, they rely on the I386 folder to gather info about the computer and then restores it to the state when it was new.

If you can acess the system, reboot and go into the bios and change the boot sequence to CD, then insert the first recovery disc. then save the settings and the computer will reboot and start the recovery process again, this should clear up the error.

If it does not it will be because the i386 folder is missing in which case you can either explore the recovery discs for it or you will have to buy a copy of Windows XP.

SOURCE: Please Help with a system recovery on a HP pavilion a1253w!

The reason the cd recovery did not work is that it was made for some other HP model.
On the unit you are trying to recover, reboot the computer and press F10 . several times. You should see a recovery menu. Select the type of recovery that will format and recover the unit to OEM defaults.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

SOURCE: Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

Hp nx6110 laptop is power lock what is unlockng process

Disconnected the RTC battery will unlock your system. See the steps below.

The more important it is to protect on's data by a DriveLock (which makes the HDD usuable when the password is not available).

Procedure to remove password
(following CPQ MSGs)

1.) Unplug AC, take out the main battery.

2.) Take out /disconnect the RTC (real time clock) battery for app. Half an hour (the period of 5 min as specified in the MSG normally is not long enough).

3.) Plug in the AC adapter (batteries still removed); computer should boot automatically, if not use the power button.

4.) The machine will boot and show the 162-error-msg "system options not set". Use F1 to save the settings.

5.) Shut down the computer and disconnect AC power again.
6.) Re-connect the RTC-battery.
7.) Install the battery pack(s).
8.) Restart the computer.

Warning: All settings are set back to factory standard.
You'll have to enter a correct date/time and change the settings to your needs.

Note: Pls strictly keep to the sequence.
Re-starting with the main battery and or RTC-battery inserted will spoil the job.

I unplugged the RTC battery but after an hour I still get the hard disk error. Incorrect disc or disk error. I have tried three different hard drives and I still get the error. Anybody please help.

I'm sure you verified and formatted the HDD before you installed it and the replacement drive is the same type HDD. IF so you could try removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard , wait a few seconds, and re installing it. Can you get to the BIOS?

HP Compaq nc6220: I need a diagram of motherboard to fix cmos wire connector. The power module on the mobo came loose while plugging in the cmos wire.

Top View/Bottom View,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/382909-001-New-HP-NC6220-Laptop-Motherboard-/170926166342?pt=Motherboards&hash=item27cbfe5146

Hover your mouse cursor in the middle of the two views. Use the Zoom feature to look at the connector, and the direction it is facing.
-> Only faces one way <- This lines up the polarity of the wires.

Using which one goes where on the motherboard's connector, suggest using short splices of wire, soldered to the existing wire 'nubs' coming out of the motherboard.
(Or existing solder joints, that went to the motherboard connector for the RTC Battery)

(Use a low wattage soldering iron, and a No.2 chisel tip. Well tinned, and have a damp sponge nearby to occasionally clean it.. Do Not suggest using as soldering gun.

Area around wire 'nubs, and wire nubs, needs to be cleaned properly. If not the tinning you need to do to the tip of those wires, won't take.
(Tinning - Thin coat of solder)

Clean with an old toothbrush, and Isopropyl Alcohol.
(Rubbing alcohol. 91 percent is best, but 70 percent will do)

CAUTION!!
Isopropyl alcohol is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!
Use in a Well ventilated area with NO sparks or flames present.

Tips of those wires needs to be tinned, and the both ends of the short jumper wires you're going to use. Heat shrink tubing needs to be used on the wires, before soldering any wires together.

The combination RTC battery harness plug, and the motherboard connector will have to be checked out for fit, when the case is put back together.
That is to say; Look to make sure there is space for this moved combo. Otherwise the wires will become pinched, when the case is put back together. laptop won't go back together, and wires may be damaged.

Motherboard connector for the RTC battery harness cable.

The reference already implies to those who know, that the RTC battery harness has a plug on the end, and the above is what it plugs into.

(RTC Battery = Real Time Clock Battery. The reference used in place of CMOS battery now )
