First check whether you have the correct transmission setting for the bit you are using. This may affect the range over which the chuck operates and how it locks onto the bit. A conventional small-diameter drill bit may not work with a hammer drill setting. If the setting is correct, then either your hands aren't as strong as they used to be and you're not getting the chuck tight, or the chuck is worn and no longer has enough friction to hold.
Try this diagnostic: when you put a bit in, use a fine-tip felt marker to draw a line from the chuck collar (the part you turn to tighten or loosen) to the chuck baseplate. If the bit comes loose, check to see if the collar is still lined up at the same place relative to the baseplate. If it is, the chuck pieces are slipping inside; perhaps the transmission setting is incorrect for the bit chosen. If the collar has worked loose (the marks didn't stay lined up), the threading on the collar or the parts it engages could be worn.
The outer sheath of the chuck turns a thread on the back of the jaws in the chuck and it it is not tightening correctly then the jaw threads have been broken/cracked or the jaws have been stressed out of alignment and are not longer closing in a parallel manner. Best replace the chuck as they are generally not repairable.
I just had the identical problem with my HJP001, and managed to solve it piecing together info from this thread. The cause for the chuck to jam was that the retaining screw had come loose and was interfering with the chuck. As others have pointed out, the retaining screw has a left-hand thread, ie reverse from most screws, which obviously needs to be taken into account. Simply tightening the screw solved my problem - together with some WD40 ;-)
this is an easy fix. it designed to come of easily and can fall off if you dont tighten the side handle. the chuck has a quick release mechanism. place the chuck onto the machine as far as you can. it wont go on all the way. simply pull back the black collar on the chuck toward the front of the chuck and push the chuck on the rest of the way.
to ensure that it is on correctly, turn the chuck by hand until it locks into place.

Place drill in vice with chuck in vice facing up . Clamp chuck lightly but with enough force to hold firmly. put allen wrench in chuck and lightly tap down to make good fit to allen screw head.Clamp chuck jaws down onto allen wrench lightly to hold wrench steady. Take piece of pipe to end of wrench,10". These chuck screws are tight. Hammer clockwise until screw brakes loose.Open chuck completely and remove screw.Chuck is threaded to spindle shaft . Place allen wrench with long end facing out of tool in chuck and tighten chuck securely. With hammer tap allen wrench sharply counter clockwise ( normal thread.)
I have a DC927 and a DC926 that I removed 1/2" Rohm Supra SK key-less chucks on. This process is pretty simple. Put the drill motor in 1st gear. Put the clutch ring in drill mode and not in driver or hammer. Reverse or open the chuck all the way. Hold the chuck firmly in a vise and give the drill a good POP counter clockwise. The last step can also be done with a pipe wrench by placing the drill on a work bench and turning the chuck counter clockwise. Continue to un-thread until the chuck is removed. The replacement chuck must have the same mounting process and mechanism. Put a few drops of locktite on the threads and thread the replacement chuck back on. Tighten the chuck using the vise or pipe wrench. Place the short end of an allen wrench in the chuck and tighten down on it. Placing the drill on a work bench, strike the allen wrench with a mallet to finish tightening and locking down the chuck. Congratulations, you have just changed out your chuck.
Hello Mike-To remove the old chuck, you'
ll need to open the jaws all the way and l;ook inside the chuck for a screw that holds the chuck onto the motor shaft. That screw has a reverse thread which means that you'll need to hold the chuck tight while using a screwdriver to turn the screw in the forward direction. After the screw is removed, p[lace a large allen wrench into the chuck and tighten it. Then using a hammer handle, rap the allen wrench in the reverse direction for removal. Then call Alltrade Tools @ 1-800-423-3598, give them your model number so they can provide you with a replacement chuck.
The chuck is held onto the drive shaft via screw located inside the chuck. The screw has reverse threads and sometimes the screw gets loose restrictinhg the chuck tightening. Turn the chuck to loosen and tighten the screw as though you were removing a normal screw. Good luck
