SOURCE: Dimension 8200 will not turn on

Elleth,

It's very possible that your power supply has gone bad. A friend of mine brought me a Dimension 8200 to look at a few months ago that was acting exactly like yours. At first glance, I assumed that the power supply was ok because the LED on the motherboard was lit up. I decided to check the power supply with a tester and found out that the only live lead was the +5 VSB (5 volt stand by) which explains the LED being on. I replaced the factory 250 watt power supply with a 350 watt and it happily booted up. Keep in mind though that you may need to make a slight modification in order to use a non-Dell power supply. I had to make the opening in the back of the case slightly larger so I could plug the power cord into the power supply.

Good luck,
Mark

SOURCE: Dell Dimension 8300 wouldn't start

Sounds like a power supply. You are getting the standby voltage and not the switched. plug all your wires in except the big 20 or 24 pin motherboard connector, take a small wire and short the green (PSU_ON) to black (ground) wires. This will simulate the computers "ON" signal. The fans should all spin up and your plugged in accessories should work, which means bad motherboard, if not bad power supply.

If the power button remains depressed during the power-on attempt, the computer immediately powers off, mimicking a "no power" symptom. Can i change out the motherboard on my dell dimension 4600 and use the one from my optiplex gx 520 in place of it.

No you can't. The Optiplex system board is a BTX type, and the Dimension uses an ATX style. The BTX board was supposed to be the new standard, with the layout changed to improve cooling air flow. Unfortunately, the I/O connectors (keyboard, etc.) aren't in the same place as on ATX boards, and you can't just drop the BTX board into the same case. (This is one of the reasons the new design didn't catch on. Seems people didn't like the idea of shelling out for a new case as well as the board.)
