Computer unplugged from power, computer Side Panel removed, follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static, BEFORE reaching inside your unplugged from power computer.

Computer on a table, computer case open, computer unplugged from power;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF, you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

Disconnect the power cable to the optical drive (CD/DVD drive), and the data cable.

The front plastic piece of the desktop computer is the Front Panel.
The Front Panel removes.
The Front Panel must be removed in order to replace the optical drive/s.

WHEN removing the Front Panel, GO S-L-O-W.

The Power On switch, Power On LED light, Harddrive activity LED light, USB front panel ports, etc; may be attached to the Front Panel.
You do NOT want to pull their wires loose from the motherboard.

In fact you may wish to make drawings, and notes as to where the wires connect; on the motherboard before removing the Front Panel.

Some Front Panels are just Covers, and the above does not need to be taken into consideration.

Look inside the computer case, and look towards the front, or Front Panel.
The Front Panel should have TABS coming from it, and go through slots in the metal framework, of the computer case.

The Tabs are plastic formed out of the plastic Front Panel.
They have a flat hook on the end. Each tab must be carefully pushed towards the Inside, or Outside, in order for the hooked end to clear the slot. Then when the Front Panel is removed, the tab will slide out of the slot.

Allow me to show you, using an HP desktop computer for an example, (Video)

Your tabs probably won't be so easily accessible, though.
Bear this in mind. They ARE THERE, I assure you.

Many thanks for your reply. Have taken note of what precautions you suggested. However, to remove the right hand side panel (viewed from the front of Pakard Bell) seems like a chinese puzzle!) Any suggestions other than a sledgehammer! Briann

2french, one of the main reasons I deem them Peckerd Bell. PB Support doesn't state it, unless I'm too thick over the years to find it. Going with what one FixYa user stated for opening his iExtreme 6070; "Remove Front Panel from bottom, 4x press out tabs, at the rear one press in clip and slide off Side Panel." Click on the blue 4 Comments,http://www.fixya.com/support/t11253310-p... If you can make out what is being stated, and get your case open, how about replying back for the next guy? If not try to post what you see, and we'll try together.

    Oops!

  • Brian Nov 12, 2012

Hi Jacocoolvette, success !! With your help and perseverance on my part not to take the sledgehammer we removed the r/h side panel of the Packard Bell. remove small screws and pushed the plastic tabs out as was described in the web Address you gave me. However, there is no need to remove the r/h panel it is only a cosmetic cover. The front plastic that you access the DVD drives can be removed by applying a firm pull towards the front and it pulls free allowing the drives to be slide out once two side screws are removed together the unplugging the power and connector cable. Will buy a new DVD and reassemble ASAP Thank you for your kind help Brian..

You're very welcome Brian, thank you for the rating! Means the Left Side Panel is the access cover, then.

Does not recognize dvd drive

When you click Start/My Computer is the DvD drive shown as one of your devices? If not then try the steps below:
Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, turn the laptop over and remove the one screw that secures the dvd drive and pull the drive out. After 20 seconds plug the DvD drive back in, and then try booting to see if it is recognized. If the drive is not recognized then you will have to remove upper and lower filters.

If you are talking about the drive won't play a dvd then that's another issue. Most times computers have a hard time playing something that was created by someone else. Try a store purchased DvD and see if it recognizes and plays it.

Need to replace cd-rom drive, how difficult? dell dimension 3000 pc desktop

It is not difficult to change cd/dvd drive.
Open cpu cabinet.
Then remove icd cable and power cable from cd/dvd drive.
Then remove screws of old cd/dvd drive.
Then you can pull it from cabinet from front side.
Then put your new cd/dvd drive into it's position then lock it with screws.
Then connect ide cable from motherboard and power cable to drive.
Then you can use it.
If you connect to drive with 1 ide cable means if you connect harddrive and cd/dvd drive with 1 cable then set harddrive as master and cd/dvd rom as slave you can set it slave with jumper settings.
It is in back side of cd/dvd drive.
There is instruction how to slave it with jumper.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Pc freezes when I click open on my nec nr 7900a cd-rw. dell pc, software windown xp,

this is most likely an interface issue either on the motherboard or drive....could be software but dvd drives don't last forever. when booting press delete and let it go into bios setup. You don't need to change anything in bios, just try opening the drive. If it opens without delay remove any disc. Reboot PC and see if the drive behaves, If it's still being awkward, with the PC unplugged open up the PC and remove the drives data cable. Start PC, close down PC. Reconnect drive (use a different IDE /SATA connection if possible) Try DVD drive again. If the fault still persists, It's most likely the drive. Get a new one they are really cheap.

Toshiba P105-S6124 DVD Drive replacement.

there is usually one screw holding the dvd drive in, lay the PC closed, upside down, and lay the replacement drive in line with the old drive, this may tell you the exact location, or where to look (it may be under another removable panel, once the one screw is removed, the drive should slide out, if you eject the drawer, it is easier to remove after you pull out the screw, most have a manual eject (Pinhole in front by eject button) insert a straightened paper clip straight in. let me know if this helps or you need more info

If it's clicking while spinning something in the drive may have broken. The platic parts they use in these drives can often snap. I would replace the drive.
