I am a bit confused by the statement,"hp laptop won't shutdown"? If you are on your desktop, click on the Windows "ball",go to start menu and click on "shut down" the computer does not start a shut down sequence? It may take a few seconds.

Thank you for your advice max. What I am saying is that I DO all that in correct sequence. All properties are correct. I am actually very good on PC...I am not a newbie...I normally can solve things myself...but this time I'm stumped.

Hi there Max. I havent written the whole sequence...because most would know what I am saying. Anyway...I go to the start orb..click..and then click on shutdown button. I have also checked the properties of shutdown button..ensuring it is actually supposed to be shutting down. I have been into registry and made sure that the relevant nos are correct pf the power shutdown sequence. I

And as far as maleware bytes, ccleaner etc...I have been using these for years. I also know what I am doing in the registry. You are lucky that you have never had this problem....because there are absolutely hundreds of people who have!! If you search google.

I'm sure that you know where you are headed, Factory Restore from your Recovery Partition. I try to avoid that like "poison" , I have restored computers many times, Windows XP recently, the 100s of updates, it's a marathon, 36 hrs. I lost count of the pots of coffee.

I tend to over look the obvious at times, have you updated any drivers lately,if so disable them one at a time and try the shut down.

I'm sure you saw this coming, Do you have any Win 7 disk? A win 7 repair disk? I have found when I work a problem for a long time it's good to ask for others advise. You tend to get tunnel vision. With 20+ years trouble shooting computers I assume nothing and use the "flow chart" in my head, 1) Is it plugged in. YES or NO. It's difficult to gauge one's level of expertise by a few word heading. Therefore assume nothing. That said, I do remember a problem with a HP Touch Smart IQ 506 that had two logons one would load as usual the other would began to load and go to a black screen for 5 + mins and after what seemed like a eternity would boot, short story long the graphic drivers, Nvidia Ge Force 9300 were different versions, go figure.

As I'm sure you know, remove all power ,battery etc,Hold down on/off button to drain the capacitors, leave battery out, plug in start tapping the "esc" key moving right across the top of the F keys, repeat process until you get a response or give up, and put in another HDD or remove the HDD and test it externally.

Have you opened the laptop and remove the CMOS battery, for an hour or so to try and restore BIOS to defaults? It sounds like a software issue, doesn't soukd like a bad HDD, but......

If you can get to the"esc" Boot menu select DVD/CD etc. or F-11 System restore/recovery.

A little moral booster, I once knocked-out the phone service of an entire town, Villa Gesell, Argentina, by a simple input at the MAP keyboard and hitting ENTER . Does that give you perspective.

If you have a HP machine the CMOS battery is simple to get to ,it's under the memory in my HP pivilion DV9320us laptop. I crack them open all the time, add memory, change CPUs, CMOS, etc. The All-in Ones are like laptops most anyway. The Gateway All in Ones are a stinker to Crack open, much like a **** shell. The machines I used to work on , these, PCs, laptops, etc., are like toys. ALSO did you verify that the disk you are trying to load the laptop with is a good copy, if you put it in another 64 bit machine does it "pop-up" a run.exe? In BIOS your DVD/CD is enabled, everything looks normal, clock is set...etc?

  • max carson
    max carson Nov 10, 2012

As you know, altering settings in BIOS and the system registry are a minefield, I've stepped on a few and had to do system reloads, but I do that 1 or 2 times a year, and can be a "Villa Gesell, Argentina moment", I am just say'in. By the way, I fixed the phone system, Quickly, very Quickly!

Could you be a bit more specific? Could you tell me the correct sequence you spoke of? I am trying to understand , you shut down using the windows 7 shut down and it re starts? Your response didn't clear up my confusion. I can remember ever encountering this. Just a thought have you done a Maleware scan lately? If not try MALWAREBYTES found at : http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/Install and Run a FULL SCAN and a program CCLEANER found at : http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ Install and Run, it's a good program to clean the junk files out and speed up you system. That a good place to start.

SOURCE: E system 1212 Laptop won't switch on. Power

Laptops are so integrated that usually a system failure that involves power issues such as in your case where you cant get it turn on with anything on the screen mean the mainboard (motherboard) is damaged. This usually leads to buying a new laptop or paying for the board to be replaced which usually costs as much as the laptop.

The only thing left to do is to reinstall it.

How can i reboot my computer please

Rebooting a computer means, pressing the Reset/Restart button. But if you wish to securely restart it, click Start (Windows XP) and then "ShutDown" button, again click "Restart". There's another option when Windows XP is in Classic mode, once you press the Shutdown button, you'll see a small window showing "Shutdown", you can click the arrow button next to the "Shutdown" and then select "Restart", now click the "Ok" button to restart the system. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click "Start", if you don't see the "Restart" button, you might be seeing the "Shutdown" button, just next to the "Shutdown" button, there's a small right arrow button, click it and select "Restart". Your system will restart.
Let me know if you need further help.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

How to reboot an acer aspire one notebook

If the shutdown button on the start menu (bottom left of the screen with a windows logon by default, or the windows key on the keyboard) does not work you have several options to try.
  1. Hold down the power button until it shuts down (should be 5 seconds) and then restart it with the power button.
  2. Use the command prompt: Hold 'Ctrl' and hit 'r' to open the run dialog box. Type 'cmd' into the dialog box. type 'shutdown.exe /r -t 0' (lower case make sure to include spaces where I have and exclude the ' ' parenthesis) to force an immediate restart.
  3. If these option do not work then remove power to the device by first unplugging AC power and then removing the battery from the laptop

Windows corruption - either a driver is malformed or one of the Wake-up settings from the device or Power settings is wrong. Easiest way is to reinstall: use a generic XP install disk with your key and later get the drivers from the HP site.

Sounds like spyware / malware i would use an online scanner like Eset or a program like Malwarebytes.

also to stop the computer from restarting open the command prompt window (start menu, click run, type cmd, click ok...) type "shutdown.exe /a" without the "" and there is a space between exe and /a this will abort the shutdown.
