Is this a recent issue ? was the sound working prior to this issue and if so when did it stop? Have you tried re-installing the drives? also check under Device Manager that it is working with no conflicts, on that note have you added any new hardware recently?

HI:
Try this:
Right clik My Computer Icon on your desktop, clik properties, then Click Hardware tab then clik Device Manager Button then try to see the sound driver is properly installed on your PC. See it if there's a "?" color yellow icon for the device not installed on your PC. If you can see it then you must install the sound driver of your laptop. Right clik it then chose Update Driver on the pop-up menu besure that you have driver disc inserted in you CD ROM then follow the instruction that comes out to you desktop.
