My RCA 8310 DVD+R/+RW -VCR Combo will not format... (by 3 users)

When I insert a +R disc for burning I get a message of "reading disc" then "New disc DVD+RV volume" then when I try to record to this disc I get a second message of "error recording" "disc may need cleaned" then the whole thing locks up and nothing will respond. I must unplug from the power source to even turn the player off, there is no response from any input, remote or buttons on the front of the recorder, DVD or VCR. I have no problem recording to DVD+RW discs only to +R discs. Can you help me with this, am I not doing something? Thank you.
