Ok, I own the exact same set--it uses a Vertical output IC located near the front of the main board number on it is LA7638--cheap part.
if you pull off the front speaker grill and remove the inspection plate you will see it almost dead center and a little to the left screwed into a small metal plate with fins--that is a heat sink--lots of these sets had or developed bad solder connections on the pins of this ic---the way I found mine was to remove the speaker grill and inspection plate and with a non metal plastic handle from a screwdriver tapped on the heatsink when the set acted up--if it clears up when you tap on it you have bad solder connections on the IC---if I remember it has 13 pins---with the trouble to get the board out to solder it up I just replaced it with a new one--the part can be purchased for less then 5 dollars at most electronics parts dealers or on the internet---My other Hitachi is a 1991 60 inch model and it has never given me any problems--by the way the 50 in the model number means it is a 50 inch set.
If this helps you give me a vote here--I do this for free--good luck.

Testimonial: "Thanks - I beleive I've found the part - diff part#,16 pins, but exact description. Thank you so much - greatly appreciate the EXPERT free advice!"
I think it would likely work if you trimmed it evenly around the sides in order to maintain the central position. Focus may have to be adjusted but thats all.
