I have recently "upgraded"!! to XP service pack 3 and now the keyboard only works when I press the Fn button. This will last from a few swconds to a few minutes and then I have to do it again. Any ideas? or should I just revert back to service pack 2 and hope this solves it.
Hi As per your description of your problem it might be an issue related to the driver for the keyboard when the SP3 got updated. You can access system restore and try to restore your computer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084 follow this article to do a system restore. Also please try this download and run those files before doing the system restore. This steps should resolve your problem http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/downloads_splash?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~mode=popup&file=142189
Try this bios update. This make sure that any recent changes that you made to the system setup or BIOS is restored to the factory default. Make sure the ac adapter is connected while doing the bios update and also let me know if this does not resolve your issue. We have more steps to do as well.

Look for the function (FN Key) combination. Most laptops have a power saver mode wherein you can power on and off the monitor only. This is done by using a FN key combination. It is usually FN+F1 or F2 for most laptops. Look through the keyboard, the sign for it is usually an icon of a monitor with some sort of X or line accross it. Press and hold down the FN key plus the key with that icon and it should bring up the display.
With the external monitor connected, try holding down the FN key and pressing one of the F keys at the top of the keyboard that has a Monitor icon on it. This should turn off the external screen and show the laptop screen. If you press it a 2nd time, BOTH screens should show up. If still blank, Press again until the External Monitor comes back on. Then go to www.dell.com/support and go to Drivers for your Model. Then download and re install the VIDEO or DISPLAY Drivers. This should fix it if its a missing driver. If STILL no display on the laptop, call Dell.
first thing to do is run psa test. turn off laptop. remove batt use ac adapter alone. press and hold on Fn key then press power button once. complete the quick test check if you will be getting error codes like 0142 , 0146 this is hard drive replacement.
Sounds like your number lock is on. Find the key with blue lettering that says 'Num Lk' (or something very similar). Press Fn and that key, and your number lock will be turned off and your keys will go back to normal.
