Question about KitchenAid KSRS25MWMS 25.0 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Our new KitchenAid side by side refrigerator makes a knocking noise after you close either freezer or refrigerator door. We haven't fully installed the ice maker yet, so I know it's not related to ice. The sound is about 4 1/2" feet from the ground on the refrigerator side, on the side but towards the front. It doesn't matter which door you close, the sound is only on the one side. The tech came out and suggested we give it a couple of weeks (it's a week old) and is hoping once it runs through a couple of defrost cycles, it could stop. He's not heard this sound before. Sometimes it knocks once, sometimes many times. It doesn't do this unless you open and close the doors. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks!

The knocking noises heard from the Freon moving through the sealed system are perfectly normal and usually do not last long. Since the evaporator coil is mounted in the freezer section, the noise is usually louder there. Some people say it sounds like marbles knocking together.

Define "last long" please. As in, it will always knock, but just a few times or it will stop after we've had it a month or so.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid Superba Ice Maker quit

Water dispenser works fine eliminates some potential probems, so disconnect the water line at the outlet of the water valve leading to the icemaker. Blow into the tube (with the freezer door open so the air has an escape route.) If you can't blow through the tube, check where the tube passes into the freezer section for an ice blockage. This would result from a water valve not shutting off 100 %, allowing a little water to dribble in and freeze the inlet shut. If you can blow through the tube, most likely the electric solenoid coil on the water valve supplying the ice maker water is bad. In either case, replace the valve. (it is a dual solenoid valve, part # 2315533)

Condensor fan running all day

when you say you removed the cardboard, did you remove the back panel that covers the compressor, fan, and coils from the back? If so that is what is causing it to run too much, this will also effect the cooling.

Freezer is very cold and refrig is cool

Hi. As long as the evaporator motor is working its one of the two as you mentioned. If the compressor and evaporator fan is running and the refrigerator door has been open, with the freezer door closed, reach into the back left top where the diffuser is located and put your hand in front of it and see if any air is coming out. You should feel a moderate breeze. If not, open the freezer door with your hand in front of the diffuser and if the air comes out good now, the return air is blocked (normally ice build up). If no air is felt, the damper is most likely bad. Use a mirror and see if the damper is closed or frosted up. This can happen from the refrigerator or freezer door being left open for some time.If you have a mechanical damper, make sure it is set in the middle. You want more air to the refrigerator section. Email me on ebay, user name themackshack if you need parts! Good luck, Mack
